Bobcat Instead
« on: October 28, 2014, 06:29:42 AM »
Heading back to the truck after a morning of deer hunting I round a corner on my bike a catch a glimpse of a bobcat running up the road.  I stop the bike, grab my rifle and walk around the corner.  Sure enough there sits a beautiful bobcat up a 30 ft bluff behind a little scrub alder.  She was just checking me out without a fear in the world.  After moving around I finally found a clean shot through the branches and dropped her.  Unfortunately my 30-30 provided a pretty good size exit wound in the middle of her back but hopefully the taxi can fix it up.  Assuming he can I think I'm going to get a full mount.  She weighed in a 18lbs.

They are pretty looking cats! Pretty good at knocking down the bird/rabbit populations too, even go after deer especially the fawns. Unless there is adequate competition (mainly coyotes but fox too..) in the food chain of the area their population has to be kept in check too

I look at this as a once in lifetime type deal, if I see one tomorrow it'll walk.  I have caught glimpses of them but never had a shot. This time I did and this animal will be forever immortalized hanging on my wall. ;)  They are pretty animals but they do their fair share of damage to the grouse population and certainly are capable of taking down a fawn.  Heck there isn't even a bag limit on bobcats so they clearly aren't endangered animals, just because we don't see many doesn't mean there aren't more then enough out there.

Got the hide sealed by the wildlife biologist and dropped it off at the taxi.  He says the exit wound won't be a problem so hopefully I'll have a bobcat full mount next Summer.  Once I get it back I'll post up an update.

Some hold the same opinion of coyotes.  I've met them, especially native American people.

That's a pretty kitty.  Nice work.  Wouldn't mind bagging one just to say i did.  They are not rare, they are just fast and sneaky.

Would you prefer they be uglier? Do you hunt pretty deer? Pretty elk?
Think about it. Why not shoot something pretty? I've trapped them and hunted them for decades. I'm glad they are pretty. Helped fill my truck with gas money to go out and shoot ugly stuff and go to high school and go to work and buy food etc. etc. etc.
They are a predators and need to be kept in balance by hunters and trappers.
God made these cats beautiful so our wifes could wear some awesome-looking fur! If I told you how awesome my wife looked in fur like this, you would pass out from excitement!  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I like the rack for your rifle on the mt. bike, much better than across your back so the mud stripe from the rear tire can mess it up. And as a predator hunter very envious of your cat!

I learned that lesson last year and it is so much easier to ride without a rifle strapped to my back.  They are just atv mounts and work great, no issues of getting loose or the rifle jumping out.  Here's a better pic if your interested along with a link to the mounts (pretty cheap!).

http://www.amazon.com/Kolpin-Rhino-Grip-Handlebar-Mount/dp/B002RTPXAE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415459920&sr=8-2&keywords=atv+gun+rack

Thank you all for the compliments on the cat, no deer yet but looking forward to late MF.  I waited till the last day of late MF last year so I'm hoping to duplicate that this year.  I'd hate to end my season too early and miss out time in the woods! :)

Well I got the kitty cat back from the taxidermist!  He did an excellent job and I couldn't be happier that I took the shot.  It was done by West Coast Taxidermist in Port Angeles.
