"Spike only" question
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:05:05 AM »
Just wondering, when did Washington State start the "spike only" restrictions for the general Elk tag?

Sorry, my question might have been worded poorly.  I know what a spike is...  Looking to know what year WDFW started limiting the general season to Spike only in most of the Eastern Wa GMU's.

For Elk....

Yes, copied from the reg book, page 45:

Definitions:
3 Point Minimum: A 3 Pt Min elk means that
a legal elk in these GMUs must have at least 3 antler points on one side, with at least 2 antler points above the ear Eye guards are antler points when they are at least one inch long A 1x3 and a 2x3 are legal elk in a 3 Pt Min unit Antler restrictions apply to all hunters during any open season

Antler Points: To qualify as a point, an antler point must be at least one-inch in length, measured on the longest side

Any Bull Elk Seasons: Open only to the taking of elk with visible antlers (bull calves are illegal)

Any Elk: Any elk may be taken Referred to as "Either Sex" in the past
Branch: A branch is defined as any projection off the main antler beam that is at least one inch long, measured on the longest side, and longer than it is wide

Spike Bull Restrictions: Elk taken in these game management units (GMUs) must have at least one antler with no branches originating more than four (4) inches above where the antler attaches to the skull An animal with a spike on one side (1x2) is legal in spike only units An animal with more than one antler point more than four inches above where the antler attaches to the skull on both sides (2x2) is illegal

True Spike Bull Restrictions: Bull elk taken in these units (GMUs 251, 328-335) must have both antlers with no branching originating more than four inches above where the antlers attach to the skull Under the true spike restriction, taking an elk that has two points on one side or antler points within one inch of the definitions regarding length of point, or point of origination, is an infraction All other types of violations of the true spike restriction are subject to current penalties and assessments

Visible Antler: A horn-like growth projecting above the hairline

Sorry, still not getting my question across.  I understand the regulations...

Wondering what year, they started putting the spike only regulation into effect for Elk in Washington...

The OP is asking "WHEN DID THE STATE GO TO SPIKE ONLY IN EASTERN WASHINGTON?" Not the internet lawyer definition on what a spike is.

It has been a few years now for spike only. Just be careful what kind of spike area your hunting in.

Yes, I get that he was asking for the year, but if you read the two posts before that,

Yes if they less that 1 inch long.

It appeared as if he was questioning this as well,

For Elk....

Sorry if my reply ruffled any feathers or put some panties into a bunch, as I said, it looked like he had an additional question...

Cool, thanks everyone!

Not ruffled, just trying to make sure my question was clear...  The "for elk" comment was in reference to a set of photos that seemed to look more like deer than elk so I was clarifying what I was looking for.

Spike

My understanding for spike only is if it doesn't have a branch that originates above the ears it can have all sorts of stuff going on in the eyeguard area and still be legal.  True spike area would be different but I have seen examples that are legal that I don't call a spike.  Ok,  just read the regs and it looks like originating 4 inches above the skull. which could be a few points an smaller bull.

As far as when it went spike only in a lot of E. Wa  I am thinking the early 90's.
