planning for late archery...
« on: November 02, 2014, 02:59:05 PM »
Hey guys, I need some help...

I am planning my late archery elk hunt and had a few questions for you about the elk in 336 during the late season.

We got into elk in the early season deep in the ___________ area. It was an awesome hunt, bulls were talking and starting to round up their cows but I was not able to close the deal... I am planning on hunting the last weekend of the late archery season (Dec 5th, 6th and 7th) in the same area. We were at elevation 4600 to 3600. I am anticipating snow in the late season, and ready for that.

Questions for you:
1. typically, will the elk be at lower elevations by Dec 5th?
2. what drives them to the wintering area? (i.e. snow, temperature, food, etc)
3. is it a great migration? or onesies twosies?

Shoot me a PM. I would really appreciate any intel and knowledge that you could share.

Lastly, what % of tags do you think are notched in the late season vs. early season?? More curious then anything...

Thanks!!

Bump this topic after 2-yrs!

Ended up going out back in 2014 for late, no luck. Didn't see any cows; saw some cool country.

Filled my 2015 tag in early season.

No dead elk (yet!) in 2016 early; thoughts on late in this area??

I have hunted 336 in the late season a few times. The last time I was up high, 3-4 inches of snow on the ground, 13 degrees, swirling winds, partly sunny with clouds/fog/snow flurries. I had a dinky 5x4 with 3 cows step onto the logging road after I passed by to nibble the stubble out of my footprints. I just happened to turn around about 150 yrds down the road, because up until that point the tracks (a pair of elk) I was following seemed to dive off into the steep and deep or went into thick stuff so you can't shoot a bow, so best to head back. The bull was oblivious to me, the cows heads were on a swivel, the wind was perfect, blowing softly at me, got to about 50 yrds(no rangefinder at that time) but didn't feel close enough to be certain I could seal the deal. The wind shifted right toward them and they took off never to be seen again. Tough place to hunt, fewer animals than I would hope for if Im going to be dealing with cold cold temps, and unpredictable wind. You can try Woods and Steele, get up to the yellow gate past cowboy butte (I think that is what it is called), and good luck. You'll need snow if you want a real chance at finding anything because it is so vast in addition to steep and deep. My bow string was super stiff at those temps as well, I have never shot my bow under such cold conditions.
