6.8 spc

I have heard of this round however haven't looked into it much. Is this a legal caliber to hunt big game such as deer with in wa? From what I have read sounds like its in between a .243 and a .270. Some of my reading has said it is a capable round for deer in an AR platform. I know you cant hunt big game with 5.56/223 sounds like the 6.8 is a larger diameter. Any input would be great! Thanks

The 6.8 SPC was developed for the military as a replacement for the 5.56 without a change in the training, but offering a heavier bullet. (.277)  It was never adopted by the military, but was embraced by hunters, and gained much popularity with them for coyote hunting, and yes, it is legal for deer-sized game too!  I have an AR in 6.8 SPC, and another AR in 6mmX6.8 SPC, also legal for deer.  Both are good cartridges, and the 6.8 SPC necked down to 6mm (.243) is a flat-shooting round and both have not much more recoil than the 5.56.

Heredoggy is spot on.  I have the 6.8spc then went to the 6x6.8.  Everything is the same, just changed the barrel to 6mm.  Biggest difference I found, was 6.8spc is consistent to 300yds. while the 6x6.8 is consistent to 600yds.  Both have killed deer.  Recoil on both is very minimal.  One of the reasons the military didn't adopt the 6.8spc was the initial change over cost.

Any change over cost these days would be prohibitive.  That being said, the 6.8 SPC was based on the 30 Remington case, because of the case head size, but the 30 Remington case uses Large Rifle primers, and the military has pretty much gone to the Small Rifle size primers.  That is why Remington brass uses Large Rifle primers, and other manufacturers, such as Hornady make 6.8 SPC brass with Small Rifle primer pockets.  I have even found 45ACP brass with Small Pistol primer pockets.
