Looking for Alta Whitetail
« on: November 06, 2014, 06:36:58 AM »
I'm new to the Board and looking for help.  I drew a whitetail tag for the Alta unit and started hunting Saturday. I have seen hundreds of Muleys, including several bucks I would gladly have come home with. I have only seen one scrawny little 3x3 whitetail and a handful of does.  I've seen the posts talking about how most of the sightings are on private lands down low.  Does anyone have some ideas for me?  I don't want to spend another day staking out a game trail or driving the highlands only to watch another Muley walk by.  I only have so much vacation time!   :bash:
Thanks!

I had the tag last year. The Alta Unit is pretty tough to find any whitetail. Shoot that 3x if I were you, you might not see anything bigger. We were lucky enough to fill 2 tags last year (small 2pt and a 4x4). Those were the only 2 whitetail bucks we saw. I will PM you with a little bit more information on where you might want to spend your time.

Friday day I took my little girl to the Alta Unit for her doe tag and had a whitetail doe at 30 yds in 30 minutes and told her to pull the trigger but the gun started shaking up and down. Dang. The Remington 700 has a trigger that isn't working wow perfect timing :bash: Sat. at 3:38 PM there were 8 legal whitetail dow in the Alta unit field but my daughter was wandering and shopping around town with grandma.  :dunno: Sunday afternoon we will try to fill her doe tag with a whitetail.  If we cant we will try the next few days if homework allows it. Tag soup isn't that bad of a snack

I left the Alta unit with nothing but my tags. The "Quality Whitetail Hunt" was nothing of the sort! After 12 days in the field, driving, hiking, climbing, and glassing fields, I saw a total of 3 bucks, the best of which was a 4x4 50 yards into a farmer's field. After knocking on the farmer's door on three separate occasions, I gave up and hunted the surrounding hillsides to no avail. I saw maybe a dozen does, but none with suitors, so hopefully the rut will start so the muzzleloaders will have better luck.

I saw a moose cow and calf, a cougar, several gaggles of wild turkeys, and enough "Quality" muley bucks to make me want to draw that tag someday.  A shame I used my points on this tough hunt.  Next time I'll get some whitetail tips earlier in my season!  Thanks all for the ideas and hints.  Good luck to everyone else!

It's not a quality whitetail hunt. It's a buck hunt if you look at the regs.
