Running and Gunning on Skagit Bay
« on: November 16, 2014, 09:59:57 AM »
We were out on Skagit Bay yesterday and had some guys roll up on our decoys in there boat. Once they saw our spread the two folks in the front started scrambling to get there guns. One of the guns had a banana clip, I assume it was some type of shotgun but I couldn't see it clearly as the sun was in our face and too their backs. Once I saw a guying drawing a bead on the decoys I coughed loudly and waved my arm. The other feller in front pointed over at us and the driver abruptly changed course. They were not speaking English, Russian maybe I don't know for sure. I talked to a couple of guys at the launch that came across what I assume was the same group running their boat full speed and shooting. I was thinking about my interaction with the guys that stocked my spread this morning and it got me wondering if I should of handled it differently. What would you have done?

Call 911, ask to be transferred to fish and wildlife, and report them.

ASAP. Actually I'm surprised that you have to ask. No offense, but poaching in a very dangerous way should never go unreported.
911 for a crime in progress.

Stan Marsh: "My Uncle Jimbo says we gotta get up there early. Right Uncle Jimbo?"

Jimbo: "That's right, Stanley. Animals are much easier to shoot in the morning."

WAC 232-16-760  Northern Puget Sound Hunting Method Restriction.  It is unlawful to hunt waterfowl, coot, or snipe from a moving boat or any free-floating device that is not in a fixed position which is either anchored or secured to shore in Port Susan Bay, Skagit Bay, Padilla Bay, and Samish Bay.

Let alone shooting from a boat under power anywhere in the state....

Idiots like that will be back out there.  Hope that was a Saiga shotgun.  That would add a whole new level of :yike: if that was a 7.62x39.

I would call WDFW and get the contact info for the Game Warden in that area.  Call and give him a heads up about the issue and the area.  Then keep his contact info handy for if/when you run into them again.
