coon tail
« on: November 18, 2014, 11:05:30 AM »
I've caught 3 coons so far, and for some reason I seem to be having trouble with the tails when skinning them. I've managed to tear about the last 3 inches off of every one of them. Maybe this is a basic or dumb question, but how in the heck do you get the bone out of the tail, and do you split the tail before or after bone out?

I split the tail as far as I can with a knife, but don't have a stripper.  I think getting one would be well worth the money.  I don't usually leave three inches, but even a tuft is annoying.

Check out You Tube on skinning coons. There's a guy that uses a tail stripper. Kinda like a wire stripper.

+1 for tail stripper. I too cut down as far as I can 1/3-1/2 and then use the tail stripper. Works great!!

The two dollar plastic one works just as good as the ten dollar metal one. I have both.

I've even used 2 sticks with just a v notched in the middle. I normally skin out my yotes in the field. Never remember to pack the tail stripper. Its worked every time so far
