Toyo RT
« on: November 26, 2014, 05:12:46 PM »
I'm really considering these new Toyo Rt's.... Ive had Toyo MT's and BFG KM2's on my truck. The Toyo's were 37x13.50's and the BFG's were 37x12.50's. Honestly the KM2's wore like dog crap. I had better luck with my MT's but since I have matured (a little) and dropping a couple grand in tires has become less appealing I see these new Toyo RT's which in my opinion seem like a hybrid between a MT and an AT tire. Still offering somewhat of a mud terrain look without going full blown grandpa on an all terrain. Sure all terrains offer a quieter ride and probably a better lifespan but you won't catch me sporting them in the 37" variety which my truck wears best. Anyone tried these yet? 45k warranty.

Wish I would have seen these back in September when I put AT's on my truck. Would have preferred the more aggressive tread pattern. :bash:

I will keep my AT2.  Look better than these confused class of tires.  Quieter and wear rated better too.  Bet the AT are better in snow as well.

Running a set of these for the last 3 years on my Chevy. Have worn evenly not to noisy works great when you let some air out in the mud, sand and snow. Still plenty of tread left for another year or two

Those look similar to the Mickey Thompson ATZ p3. I had the ATZ (not p3 at that time) on my Tundra. I got 50,000 out of them with about 7/32 of tread left when I got a pinhole in the side wall of one from running the scabland rock in eastern WA. They were noisier than an AT, but a cross between the AT and MT. They worked great in mud, snow, and rain. Not so great in ice, but I handled that with less pedal.

So you've tried thes then? Ive  had AT Toyos too back when I was a kid when I had a Toyota tacoma. Not a bad tire but would look rediculosly stupid on my truck in a 37. I don't want my truck looking like an 80 year old drives it

I just picked up some cooper st max  for my 350 and could not be happier mt/at hybred with great traction. And about 600 cheaper than toyos . Schwab is pretty proud of there rubber. By the way I've run many a Toyo , I'm glad I found these coopers

I've been looking at toyos recently( I've always ran BFG). I have an f350 now and have heard toyos run pretty good on heavier trucks plus they have the 45k warranty. The rt"s look pretty cool but I need them in a 35 12.50. Hopefully they don't look too weird. I've also looked at the cooper brand but not sure. I'd be interested to hear others input.

What are they load rated? I have a 07 Cummins ram 2500 quad cab long bed. The Toyos lasted quite a bit longer. The BFG KM2's were almost a joke how fast they wore

Im most likely going to get the rt's as I was pretty happy with my mt's. Plus I will have a legitimate debate talking tires after officially trying a few rather than ranting on how my blah blah blahs are the best tire in the world in the mud snow and mall parking lots....I know they are a new tire and probably don't have a ton of reviews yet so I guess I will be a guinea pig and try em.

I went through all the same stuff. Used to be a BFG guy when they had the old MT style. New style sucked. Ran toyos and really did love them. There a great MT. These coopers are a 10ply tire with I believe a 3ply side wall. I'm running them on a 01 F350 crew cab. I'd tell you the load rating but the rating system is slipping my mind right now and I do t want to tell you wrong. I know there rated for a 1 ton to tow. If you know the Toyo M55's they remind me a lot of those. Another great but expensive tire, difference is I think the coopers look cooler

Cool thanks I will check em out youre not the first to recommend the cooper's plus they do look good. I'm not all about performance. I admit it's a pavement pounder that seldom gets off road but it's lifted and has the look I like. I do some towing too. I just can't sacrifice the "look" I like and toss all terrains on it otherwise I would have left it stock understanding that's not everyone's priority. I'm willing to throw away some cash and sacrifice performance and mileage to achieve the look I like.
Seems tires are more and more expensive each time I buy and I am not biased to "one certain tire"
Thanks all for the input

I put a set on my 2500HD about a month ago.  One of the few tires on the market with a 3 ply sidewall.

Does goodyear make a duratrac that big? I've talked to several people who are pretty happy with them on 3/4 tons. I like the look too. Might be an option???

Strange, I've had mine since they came out and never had an issue and have out 50k plus on them. About this time next year I will most likely replace them.

Near as I can figure there just trash. My truck sees more dirt roads than most do and some of them are pretty rough. My buddy has them on his pavement princess dodge and loves them. I need more of of a set of tires then looks and a quite rid on asphalt, so like I said I will never buy a Goodyear product again let me down to many times on That set

My dad and my buddy both have 315/70/17 duratracs on their Ram 3500s. My dad's have less than 5000 miles on them and my buddy has about 20k on his. They both had flats during elk season. They don't seem very durable. I'm glad discount tire talked me out of them

Yeah, Good Years are junk. I had a set of new wranglers on my F150 when I bought it and the tread was coming off in half dollar sized chunks after about 9,000 miles. I bought a freightliner work truck this summer that came with new good years on it. After about 6,000 miles the tread was coming off in 2" strips and the sidewalls we're coming apart.  Just junk

I am running the Duratracks on my F150 and my little Toyota 4x4.......so far maybe the best tire I have owned......on the Ford in the last two years I have driven to Wyoming twice and one trip to Iowa last Christmas......they ride like a AT and throw mud and snow like a MT.....drive great on ice too. My only concern is they seem a little soft and when the truck is fully loaded with wet wood they seem to squish down a little more than I like.

I am comparing them to Mickey Thompson MTR and Toyo MT as the previous tires I ran on the Ford. 30K on them and they still look new and I have never experienced a flat...     Doubt they make a 37 so maybe this is a moot point.

The guys on the overland site seem to like Duratracs and they do a lot of offroading, but their use was on FJ's and 4Runners not full size pickups.

I know from your prior posts how picky you are with your truck - how it looks, how you use it and what you expect from it.
With that said, my gut says you will have buyer remorse over not going with the Toyo MT's again.
Both my Dodge SRW CTD trucks have the MT's in 35 12.50 18.  I have contemplated each time to switch to another and just can't do it so I bite the bullet and get the MT's.  My 2002 work truck is getting close to another set of shoes and at $440 a piece it's gonna be painful for them MT's. :(
That's just my .02 but I will be curious to see what you go with and your future report if you go elsewhere.

I order  a set of 4 Toyo Open Country RT's 35/12.50/18"s  last week from Discount Tire in Wenatchee for 1927.00 installed. Schwabs wanted 2047.00 and you can't make an appointment to get them installed.

I went in to Discount Tire a couple weeks ago to price em out. I used to have a good friend that worked at Schwab where Id buy tires for my truck and the wives car, he'd save me a few bucks. Since then Ive bought all my tires from Discount. I bought my last set of 37" BFG KM2's, a set of Pirelli's on the wives Armada and a set of Pirellis on our Camry. Ive decided to get the RT's. Read a few reviews on full size diesel trucks that tested em and really liked em. I need a 37 though, and they only offer the RT in a 20 inch diameter so I will be needing new wheels too since I currently have 18's. I got a price from them but I think I will go back in and see if I can get them to cut me a little better deal since in two and a half years Ive spent almost about 3500 in rubber at their store.

in my experience with Discount, they do have negotiating room on both tires and rims.  Not sure how much you can get, but worth asking for 10% and hope to settle part way

I was in Schwab today and noticed the R/T's for the first time.  Had me really intrigued.  I had the A/T's on my old silverado 2500 and am currently running the M/T's on my nissan titan nearing the end of their tread life (35k +).  Anyone know what the relative price difference is between the M/T's and R/T's?

The rt's cost less. 37x13.50x20 were like 419 ea. I had mt's once an if I remember they were like 460 ea for a 18 inch wheel. Km2's were up to 550 ea..... yikes

I ordered up a set of Toyo RT 77x12.50x20 from Discount last week. They beat the lowest price I could find them on the internet for. They also price matched the wheels I wanted no problem. I made the argument I have spent a quite a bit of money there over the last few years and they threw in the valve stems and their lifetime tire warranty they normally sell for like $40 each tire. Gave me a $100 mail in rebate on the wheels and another $100 mail in rebate on tires. Only issue was they tires were 45 days out straight from Toyo which isn't too big of a deal for me. All in all I was able to knock a little over $300 from the original quote they gave me when I price checked them a month ago. After I get them and run them for 10k I will give another report.

So I feel obligated to give a one year update since Ive owned these tires and how I feel about them. My initial impression was I still liked the look. Ive had Toyo MT's and BFG KM2's and I liked the performance of both and the looks. I actually preferred the Toyo MT's over the KM2's. Back to the RT's. However, these RT's are quite a bit cheaper.  I was the guinea pig buying these tires. My close buddies and guys who Ive grown up with have gone through all of the brands over the years and all have had the same opinions for the most part. The truck drove really nice, well as nice as a full size lifted dodge turning 37" tires will drive, no its not a cadillac  with girly IFS. The tire noise was much quieter, but don't all new tires sound quieter than the old ones you just replaced? After about three months my buddies start putting them on their trucks too. Fords, Chevs, all the full size trucks. After about six months Ive noticed significant wear and the overall feel of the tires has declined noticably. Ive put about 10k on the tires in a year and that counts a drive to nevada and back. When fall and winter hit I notice they DO NOT HOOK UP. Don't even think of pulling out in front of someone if you are unsure. They spin so bad. Last weekend I was over east with my buddy and we would pull off the road to glass deer and get stuck in an inch of snow (that was his Chevy with RT's). It was so bad we started making all the jokes what RT stands for.... My other friend who tows a lot of heavy equipment says the same thing. He hates them. Anyway hopefully someone has had better experiences with them but I will never buy another Toyo RT for anything.

Interesting.  I'm about at the one year mark and I have the same impression.  I've had the AT's, MT's, and the RT's.  All things considered, the RT's might be my least favorite.

I didnt see you specify year of your dodge. Did you consider running hummer tires since your rocking the 37" size already? I know quite a few people who have gotten great wear and decent traction on a budget.

Firestone Transforce ATs carry the load off road on our type 6 engines at work. They do a really good job! Rocks, fire, sand, heavy loads, these tires do an amazing job.

Sorry but not necessarily surprised to hear that those RTs are junky.  I have heard a few similar reports, particularly where snow/ice are concerned.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Do you think that the tires are not as good because you are running a heavier truck?  Would a midsize pickup benefit from them more?

The RTs look like a cheap knock off tire. I'm not surprised they don't perform well.
