Red Dot Site on Ducks.
« on: November 27, 2014, 04:53:04 PM »
So last turkey season I used a Red Dot site on my shot gun. I went out on a quick duck hunt before our thanksgiving dinner today and tried wing shooting w/the red dot site on my gun. I love it. I only had two ducks to shoot today, first one landed in the decoys and started down river. I stood up it flew, fallowed it w/the dot, bang, it dropped at 35yds or so w/a 2 ¾” 1/8 oz #4’s. Later another one did the same, dropped it almost in the same spot on the river. These were singles today; I hope it is just as good on doubles and triples. BTW, last season I noticed I was missing a lot of birds and the ones I hit were all shot up. I have always shot 3” after steel came along. I got 3 boxes of 2 ¾” #4’s for Christmas years ago and never used them. Steel shoots real tight. I use an improved cylinder choke. I figured the 3” didn’t open up as soon and with the speed I was missing and the shot up ones were solid hits. So last year I shot a triple over decoys on the first round of ducks and another triple on a jump shoot that day w/2 ¾ #4’s. The last shots on the jump shoot were 35 to 40 yds, the ducks dropped dead.

Nothing wrong with 2 3/4 #4 steel, I load my own for decoying ducks. I have shot a few rounds with the Burris shotgun scope thing, so if the red dot works for you why not use it.

2 3/4" #4s work real well out of an IC.

I usually use #2 or #3 for mallards. When steel first was made mandatory they recommended 2 sizes larger steel pellets than lead, we were shooting #6 lead for ducks that meant #4 for ducks with steel. We killed lots of ducks with the #4 shot but I have been killing them better with #2s. If the red dot works for you great. I bought one of the red EasyHit fiber optic sights because Tom Knapp endorsed them. I never saw it when I was shooting because I never focus on the barrel when I shoot. When I shoot a shotgun it is like pointing with my finger it is always pointing where I am looking. I took it off and tossed it on a shelf.
