my 2014 whitetail buck
« on: December 04, 2014, 05:22:44 PM »
Well I just got back from my Idaho deer hunt with no success. I stayed with a friend at his parent’s house which was way better than I had planned. A warm bed and a hot meal every night is more than I am use to with my deer camps. We were able to call in a nice four point to thirty yards but he never stepped into my shooting lane. After that I put the bow down and grabbed the rifle and didn’t see another shooter buck in Idaho.
I made it back to Washington on Monday and had till Sunday to hunt so I planned to sit in my tree stand all day every day. Checking my trail cams I noticed that the buck were moving all day long for the past week which got me pumped for the next day’s hunt. The cold weather really came at the right time. It makes it hard to sit in a stand all day long but when the deer are moving that helps you forget about the cold. Tuesday I had does and small bucks coming in all day long keeping me entertained. Around Two pm I looked up and saw some legs coming into the stand through the brush straight ahead about fifty yards out. Straining to see what it was I noticed a parts of rack coming through the tree limbs so I grabbed my bow. Just about the time the buck stepped out into the open I realized it was the big five point that I had pics of for the last two weeks. I got so excited that I forgot where I was holding my bow and the bottom cam hit the seat of my stand. The buck looked straight up at me for about ten seconds and took off. My heart sank, I could believe I had just screwed that up. Needless to say more deer came in including some smaller bucks but the big five never came back.
Wednesday morning rolled around and before it got light I was covered in deer. As it got light was watching a small four point feeding with some does and fawns. About half hour after shooting light I heard something coming in from my right and it had the deer’s attention as well. As it got close the rest of the deer started moving off. When it came out in the open I knew it was a shooter right away. As it came in the other deer gave it plenty of room so and I made sure I knew were my bow and cams placement was the whole time. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake. I finally came into my shooting lane and I was already drawn back. For those of you that haven’t shot lighted nocks before I highly recommend them. Not only being cool to watch the light fly through the air but you can also see exactly where your arrow hits the animal. The arrow completely passed through the deer and stuck into the ground behind it. The buck jumped and ran about forty yards before expiring. It wasn’t the big five from the day before but I couldn’t be more thrilled to shoot this one.

Congrats Curt. That's a good looking buck.
