Dogs are pretty amazing animals.  Lab's are a very interesting subset.

I had a Lab that hunted for four years with a pointer.  The pointer died just two days before the opener at 13.5 years!!  The Lab went out two days later and promptly went on point.  I called over to my friend and said I think she is on point.  As I approached her a rooster went up.  About a half hour later there was another point and another rooster.

Near as I can tell she decided since the pointer was dead she had to do it all.  Her pointing was a bit more problematic when it came to running birds.

She also realized that her nose was no match for those German pointers.  So after awhile she started watching my friends shorthair hunting.  He was a big, old slow dog.  As he got birdy she would leave me and run over to my friend and flush the bird!!

Unfotunately, she died at seven.  But what a character.

Yea a couple weeks ago out this dog about 3 times told me to go the other way.  I figured to be done on the trek up a couple places and he just would not come back down with me, he kept looking at me and looking up the way.  So turned around and on several occasions sure as heck there is a bird, I trust this dog in the field 100% and go where he wants to go.  Have had labs for over 16 years and this one is pretty damn good in the field...

I like to get as many touches on birds in a season as possible, that is key to your dog getting better.

I love letting the dogs lead the way and take me where they want. I have 2 labs a mother daughter pair. The mom points but daughter seldom does. As far as labs go they have good noses but my vizsla smells birds the labs have no idea are there or were there.

We picked up a yellow lab from the humane society years ago and he turned out to be the best dog I've ever hunted behind. I don't think he was a trained hunter but he took to it naturally. The great thing about him was his ability to point birds. He would straighten that tail and raise his front leg, this dog was money. When he died it was a sad sad day. RIP Olliver....

All depends on the Lab my friend....

Sounds like a test will be required to determine the better nose. My vizsla is in heat right now so we should wait until she is done and I have had her swimming some. I noticed you mentioned "he' in your post so her scent would really mess your dog up.

Look at the Cooke Canyon ad in the regs.. That was my Lab "Ruger" Solid on Point.
My New lab "Harley" also came from Cooke Canyon and is super Solid on Point. And just as solid in the blind.
