Any owl identifiers?
« on: December 20, 2008, 11:03:44 PM »
Saw this guy while coyote hunting. I think its a saw-whet owl, but not sure. just curious what you guys thought. I'm no owl buff, just guessing from looking at pictures on the internet.

Northen pigme owl?   If it is real small as it looks, they are pretty rare.
The wife said if I go hunting 1 more time, she's going 2 leave me!!  Gosh I'm gonna miss her.

I would agree that it's a Saw-whet owl. The dark bill gives it away. Northern Pygmy Owls have a lighter colored bill. Great picture by the way. Here is a Nothern Pygmy Owl that I saw last month. Notice the color of the bill.

100% sure it's a saw whet owl.  Timber is absolutely right.  In addition to the bill color, the white marks on top of the head are short lines on a saw whet, little circles on the pygmy.  Great little critters!
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.
