re-blue a berral & action
« on: December 08, 2014, 03:01:10 PM »
I bought a Browning BL-22 that is in pretty rough shape. Looks like an easier begginer project for some reburbishing. I already have the stock sanded dwon and am going to oil soon. I was also thinking about re-blueing it. That you tube videos make it look easy but have heard that it is hard to get it an even color. Is this a do it yourself project for someone thats never done it before? Has anyone used "Perma Blue" and what where the results?

Thanks for the help.

For the perma blue it is hard to even out.  You have to do a good job on degreasing.  And then for best results, use a butane or propane torch.  The stuff seems to like to be used on really hot metal.  Then do multiple coats.

Is there a different brand you would recommend that works well and is easy to use?

I haven't tired the others.  I just get the perma blue because it is cheap and relatively easy.  It is a light bluing, but easy enough that I can just reblue every year.
There are others where you have to mix salts and chemicals and dip the parts for a certain amount of time, but it seemed too much a hassle for me.
