FT Training group
« on: December 09, 2014, 02:50:03 PM »
Hey just thought I would check to see if there are any Retriever  FT training groups in the Vancouver/Portland area. I know of some HT groups, but I am looking at the FT route with my new lab puppy. at least Derby and quals and we'll see after that. I get him in January as a pup and will be following the Hillmann puppy program, but not necessarily sticking with that after 6 months old. My pup should be a high drive dog and I like the way his program helps emphasize balance of excitement and obedience.

Anyways, thanks for any leads on training groups.

getting into a group is nearly impossible. Usually, working and volunteering at the local clubs' field trial, getting to know some folks and having a capable dog and a personal commitment is a start. finding and training on weekends with a pro is also a good way to get to know a few folks. FT trainers will not allow someone to just show up once and a while. showing you are committed to it and being willing to sit all day and throw for other people is how to get started. For the Am. being successful requires training 5-6 days a week. (productive training) which means a mid week group, both days on the weekend etc. FT takes way more than just a good dog.

If you are really serious, contact me. I can give you some local #s and you can contact those folks.

Thanks Happy, I am excited to be working towards the goal of an All Age caliber of dog. I've been training my other dog with a hunt test pro and really want to take this pup as far as he's capable of.

Eventually I will try to get him on someone's truck in the future but will be doing his early work myself (thus the need for help from others).

I know it's not impossible to do it as an Am. but having him on a pro trialer's truck is obviously a lot better.

Thanks for you imput.

WRL- I will contact you shortly, I appreciate your willingness to help.

Is it a game changer that he will be a brown dog???  :chuckle:
