Bruces's Trapline
« on: December 20, 2014, 07:21:42 PM »
Well, getting a late star but better late then never.
I had a job to finish up early on in the month and wouldn't you know it  a couple of days before I was done I broke my big toe. That sounds pretty insignificant but it makes for a slow go of it getting about.
I have to admit with the price structure of furs sliding fast I'm finding it hard to get motivated too.
Upshot of it is I'm not working very hard at it but I do have some new traps to test so there will be a few trap line pics.
Had some traps out for about a week now.

Here's pictures of one of my new traps. 10x18x40

Here's five of them loaded up, folded flat for transport

Something I never had happen before. This beaver was caught in a pond with a thick deposit of rotting alder leaves on the bottom. With the new traps its feet went through the mesh and were down in this muck. Two day check and its feet were slipping. Did not affect the fur as it was above the muck.

First civet

The coup de gras

Here's something notable. My first double on otter in a cage trap

JC  :hello:

Love it but I tried a little different approach on a couple. I had a coupler to go over the end. The idea being they wouldn't be able to stick their nose out and get any air and would be out faster. Not working as well. In the act of putting the pipe coupler on the trap they sprayed a little. I guess that is just a little too much jostling.

Caught two more today. Probably seems like bottom of the barrel trapping but probably worth as much as a couple beaver and a lot less work. Call me crazy but I enjoy catching a civet as much as a lot of other fur bearers.

Your definitely the civet king! My wife wants one pretty bad so I guess I should finally set a trap for one. I actually catch quite a few in my bobcat traps but they squeeze out of them. Really cool double on otters!

Believe it or not, skunks can fetch 18 to 30 dollars here in NoDak. Especially if the stink sacks are intact. Haven't dealt with any this year but they certainly don't get thrown out.

I like them but the use of them has given me new ideas for improving them. I'd like to try a 10x10x32 folding as a swim through. Also had a mini brain storm on my folding to make set up a little faster.
It seems that perfect trap is always just out of reach. Maybe some day.

I like those 10×10,but how short can you go.It would be  nice to  go with a shorter trap.
We made some 10×10×28 with gravity doors but haven't  had much luck.Had them get bumped around alittle and had a beaver swim through  one and blow the door out the exit.

17 pounds. I know that is heavier then the old but I would feel comfortable setting them dry for any animal. Wire is so much tougher and should be very durable.

Drew a blank today. Maybe I'm on Santa's naughty list. :dunno:

The ones I have used lately were 1.5 music spring. I was getting some complaints the doors were to hard to set so I downsized the springs a little. The 1.5s are plenty strong.
The pictures with the two otters are in a collapsible trap I made last summer. Too hard to build but that was 14 gauge 1x1.
The ones I have made lately are with 2x2 mesh. The wire is .135" It is slightly larger then 1/8th. Caught a few beaver in them so far but nothing else.

They are collapsible and I really like them but have decided on a couple minor changes. That is what testing is about I guess.
I just finished some 10x10x32s to try. Get them out in a few days when they are treated.

I can't sell any of the new ones yet. I do have a bunch of the old style non-collapsible ones for sale. Bargain prices! Trying to clear them out.
Mostly 10x10x48. I see a number of threads with pictures of them.

Not catching enough to make it worth the while posting. Very discouraging as I am not seeing much sign of anything.
Caught a 'possum today and had one of my new traps stolen. Not much profit in that.
Sure would like to spot it in a 2nd hand store but likely it is gone for good. Been doing some tooth grinding over it. More then a little upset.

That sucks, Bruce. I can deal with not catching stuff but thieves are the worst. I've been thinking of setting a cage in a well traveled area with multiple cams set around it. Trap a thief!

Grrrrrrrrrr, been slow here as well.  A few days in single digits and everything kind of shut down.  Finally picked up a couple of coons yesterday and we have a warm up headed so things should pick up.  But at least I haven't had to deal with any trap theft...yet.

Well, I finally connected on a cat. Fairly plump tom cat.

That is a trap I built and had at the Summer Rendezvous last year. Pretty nice trap but too hard to build.
I think Rasbo won one of them in the raffle.

I do but that is one design back. The new ones are much easier to build. After they are built that one and the new ones work great but there is only about a tenth the labor in building one of the newer ones

Haven't been doing much lately. Thinking about pulling what traps I have out. Going on a trapping trip in late Feb so I'm not done for the year.
Here's the last cat I caught. I thought it was pretty but the belly is poor. Going to get it tanned.

That is one of my new 10x18x40 swimthroughs. I use them for beaver, otter and cats. I left the one door closed at this set and used it as a single door baited set.
