I just picked up some Wolverine boots with Gortex on clearance for $49.95 at North 40. To good to pass up!

Just picked up a pair of Kenetrek Mountain extremes. So far, so good. Plan on putting some miles on em to see.

I was on the fence with buying them being the $$'s. But all reviews and people I've talked with say you can't go wrong, If they fit your feet. We'll soon find out.

I cannot imagine a better shoe for high country, steep ground or walking on logs and slash then a good pair of caulk shoes. I've been wearing them for 42 years.
Mind you I said good ones and that may be more then most want to spend. I wear Kuliens.

I am on the East side and have been using a pair of Zamberlan 960 Guides.  They work really well, keep out the water, and have pretty good grip.  I have done well in snow, wet ash, and loose scree with these - usually without too much slipping.  They are spendy, but I have talked with numerous back country firefighters who swear by them.  So far, I'm impressed.

I went through a couple pairs of danners and a pair of schnees before I realized it was worth the money to get Kenetrek mountain extremes.  I've had them for almost a year now and haven't had any issues with them.

I have had 3 pairs of Kenetrek Mtn. Extremes and all have leaked and/or had the rubber rands peeling off at 10 days...but their last fits my foot better than any other boot.

My Lowas on the other hand are going on 6 years and 2 years and are still going strong. They do require a break in for my heel though.

No matter what boot you choose it MUST fit your foot.

I am in the debate of what boot to get.  I have narrowed it down to Hanwag Alaskas or the Zamberlan guide 960.  I guess I need to go try both of them on and see what fits best.  I tried the zamberlans last week at REI and they fit awesome. No need to get a wide.  Now I need to go try on the Hanwags

I like the kennatreks but the sole is too stiff for me so I went with the Meindl, they have a bit more flex to the sole. Not sure why JM had problems with his but I spoke to several who had no problems with them and I have put a allot of miles on mine in two years with no problems. Most complain that they squeak but if you but if you put that archery felt used to silence your riser shelf on the inside of the one lace tab on the boot they are quiet as a mouse! Danners for me are junk they leaked bad and after getting one pair replaced they wouldn't stand behind the second pair after they leaked first time out ... That was enough for me and have never worn a pair again

I wont own another pair of meindl. They were complete crap for me as well. After being replaced 2 times in 2 years tue third pair is held together with freesole now but they havent started leaking yet. I wore them a couple weeks ago and got bad blistes after 8 miles. Not sure why they havent given me blisters before. Seems like the width stretched. I am going to try some zamberlans or kenetreks next. Hope they work with my narrow and super high arch feet.

I have the crispi hunter gtx and so far I love them.  The most comfortable boot I've ever worn.  I hiked over 50 miles the week after I bought them with no blisters of problems.  I did get my wet feet in them once in Montana this year.  My feet were damp but not soaked.  I think any boot would have leaked on that day.  We hunted for 6 hours chasing elk through willows and 4-8 inches of standing water the whole time.  I should have worn rubber boots.

I wanted to get a pair of Kenetreks, but I found a good deal on a pair of Zamberlan 996 VIOZ GT's. I tried them on in the store and they're really comfy. They have a ton of good reviews online too.

Bull did you put in the extra thin little sole insert that they provide? I can't remember what it's called but meindl's have tha cork sole and will form fit to your foot, once you get it where you want it that insert stops the process ... Maybe you just kept stretching them and blew out the waterproof membrane and seams??? :dunno:
