Whats your go to boot for the high Country?  Sept-October
My Assolo Sasalongs are great.  But as soon as I get them on the wetside wet sticks and logs they are like ice skates....

Danner Acadias. Stable, long lasting, somewhat heavy, somewhat uncomfortable.

Well, that's kinda the deal with Western, WA.  There are a few better than the others, but nothing is really great on wet sticks and logs except corks or felt.  You just have to get used to stepping over things on the Wetside!  One of the reasons I like Sitka pants so well over here.  Even wet they don't bind when straddling logs!

Danner Pronghorns have been a terrible boot for us as they wear out fast and leak after just a couple uses.  But, they do seem to be one of the better boots when you find yourself on the slippery stuff.  My HanWag's are much better than my LaSportiva's, but I've done the wet stick and huckleberry slide in them both on more than one occasion.  Best to just get the right mindset and watch your step!  I'd much rather have a pair of quality boots that keep my feet dry and give complete ankle support than some cheap thing that is only a minute improvement on slippery surfaces.  September I'm always in the LaSportiva Trango Alp.  October depends on wetness and cold. Either the same LaSportiva's or the HanWag Trapper...just can't beat Duratherm for waterproof durability!

I did notice on one of ShaneVG video's that he is using chain crampons on the steap huckleberry slopes.  That sounds like a pretty dang good idea to me.  Your Asolo boots should be compatible with those!  I'll need to watch the video again to tell for sure, but I think these are the ones he was using http://www.omcgear.com/footwear/footwear-accessories/snow-traction/icetrekkers-shoe-chains.html

Good luck, be safe

I like the Danner Pronghorns also but as RadSav stated I had problems keeping my feet dry with them after a couple of years. I ended up putting FlexSeal on them and as they say on TV; 'It really, really works!'. A friend of mine told me about the stuff and I kind of put it off but decided to try it figuring if it could seal a screen door in the bottom of a boat it might work. I bought the clear stuff and put on a couple of coats and it's working like a champ through one hunting season. I even waded a stream with them on and they held up.

Here is the H-W link to that Shanevg thread and video.  Looks like the 9:40 mark where he talks about them.  They obviously are not the ones I listed above.  Hopefully he will chime in and give details on which brand those are.

Probably no better high country westside guy to PM and ask questions.  He has been very generous about responding to some of my questions.  Good Dude

I been running asolo TPS 520 GV's. These boots are amazing! Like strapping armor on your feet.  Only troubles I've had is like you said. Wet sticks or small logs can be slick. Hasn't been an issue for me.  I'd try radsavs advice with the crampons. Asolo claims most of there sole will work with most crampon's

I would take a look at the tread designs.  The best ones I've found have the deepest tread with a lot of spacing on the bottom.  Not as comfortable on the road/trail/small rocks as cushiony shoe type soles though.  Corks have good grip, but if you walk on anything other than soft moss/wet sticks/logs they really transmit the feeling of the ground into your feet at the individual points.

Due to Plantar tendon issuses. My favorite boots are too stiff to flex (they flex some)
Pro: my feet love them and the few folks I've turned onto them also love them.
Con: very slick! Contact point is very small cause they dont wrap like a low tire pressure situation ?

I learned to stay off the logs and stuff... esp when out alone.
Good hunting
Pavement, crowds and inaccurate rifles...
Thanks anyway.

My favorite boots right now are the only Danners I've ever liked. The Rebel Rock GTX. Unfortunately, they are now discontinued, so when I wear these out, I'll have find another good early season boot. For late season, I use Kenetrek Mountain Extremes.

I have used Lowa Renegades for the last 5 years, and I'm happy with them.  At the end of this year I noticed some of the stitching starting to pull out in a flex point.  Not bad though for 5 years of abuse, and they're still waterproof.

Don't get the Mendels from cabela, I ruined them in 2 months. I also don't like the kenetrek mountain extremes either. They're durable but the soles are extremely hard and the boot lace holders by the ankle tear the rubber that wraps around the boot. The boot lace holder catching the rubber isn't fun when you have a pack on

Find your favorite pair and then slip something like these Kahtoolas on when you are working clearcut slashy overgrowth.

Or maybe the kid at Les Scwab might want to play with installing studs in your boots??   :yike:
