Success in 2008 deer season
« on: December 23, 2008, 07:40:41 PM »
Shot my first Muley this year. we were hunting the Entiat unit north of Wenatchee.

We were hunting this canyon that has been successful for us in the past. My daughter and i walked down the ridge to our spot where we can watch the canyon. As day light came we could see nothing for about 15 min, until i spotted a ( about 450 yards) set of "Micky Mouse Ears" sticking out of the ground. A further look showed a doe, spike and buck hiding behind a bush. I watched the deer behind the bush looking for 3 points but could not confirm it was a leagal buck. We snuck  about a 100 yards closer to get a better look, and still could not be 100% sure it was a leagal deer, i knew it had at least 2 points. My wife was wondering an old logging road below our look out, so i waved at her and had her walk the Rd towards the end (the deer were on the end of the Rd bed ed down). As she rounded a corner the deer saw her movement and stood up. I told my wife to sit down and not to move as i looked at the deer. The deer behind the bush stood up and turned his head just rite, it was  3x3.
I took aim the buck and was ready to shoot when a shot came from from the hill above me. the buck did not move so i squeezed the trigger on my 270. He took two steps and fell, right down the ravine. Watching the deer roll down the ravine where it stopped on a log about 50 yard below the Rd.

Then the work began but that is a whole other story..............

This is how we got it back to camp

Rashell my daughter shot a doe 2 days later (she had a doe tag). We decided to walk a ridge up and than back to the truck on the opposite ridge. About a half mile up my daughter spoted some blood spots on the ground, they were fresh. We waled up a bit further and crossed to look on the opposite riven. I spotted some more blood and thought maybe some one bagged a deer in the area earlier in the day, than i spotted a deer walking about 100 yards up hill from me, it was a small doe. then i heard something Bel me and saw a big doe not 50 yards down the hill. i signaled to my daughter and she came over, we saw that it was wounded. It was gut shot and had a broken leg, it tried to run but could not it just went about 20 yards and stood there.
We had a discussion about wounded deer and she decided to take it. She put a bullet through it at 50 yards.

We knew of a disabled Hunter that was hunting near by earlier that morning. So we went to where they were parked and see of they shot this deer and were unable to get it, but when when we went to where they were the were gone.

She was more than happy to tag this deer and you can see it in her face.

This was a good season with lots of memories of hunting with the family, yes even my wife (she missed a deer on the move shortly after i shot mine, if went up the hill my son shortly behind, than we heard a shot on the other side of the hill, we watched for a running deer but did not see one in our direction).
