My buddy had his old dogs first TPLO at one year old. The second TPLO at two years old. She's 14 and moves like you'd expect an old dog to move. Had many hunt tests and long pheasant and duck days under her belt.

Sometimes it just happens. Go to Sun Valley. Don't do it locally if you spend the money. SV is less than most the local folks I'm told and TPLO for performance dogs is their specialty. That is 90% of what they do is what I'm told.

Buddy just updated me the most reputable local vet is $4,500 and the SV is now $2,500.

For what it is worth, WSU did my dog's TPLO surgeries for right around $2,500 per leg.  If Happy's reccomendation is accurate which I presume it is, doing it local will save the hassel and cost of travel.

I hate to say it but for my money on an 8 year old, I would either do the "thread" repair (my brother had this done on the leg of one of his dogs for less than $800) or TPLO if you can afford $2,500 but most likely you should retire the dog from hunting either way.  I would probably do the thread repair, retire that dog to pet status, and start looking for a new pup...I think it would be a better use of funds to be perfectly honest.

Care credit is good. or just a regular CC.  after that Id make sure to get insurance for your dog.

2500 is pretty steep. Id shop around but make sure you are going with a vet that is reputable.

My dog tore her meniscus at 3 years old and we had the surgery done.  She recovered great, but then she tore her other one a year later.  We had the surgery done again and she fully recovered.  We had to put her down last year, but she made it to 13 years old and she had a great active life.  Her surgeries were done back in 2004 & 2005 and it was $1000 each surgery.  So, to me, $2500 seems a little high, but maybe times have changed that much in 10 years.  Whatever you decide, I hope your dog recovers well and you'll be hunting over her again soon.  Good luck.  It's heart breaking to see your dog in pain.
