Best area for trad achery
« on: March 02, 2015, 06:45:30 AM »
Hey guys and gals. I'm done with the Army and will finally have time to try elk hunting. I'll be in GMU 101(north of Republic) and wanna take an elk with my recurve. Currently I can with 100% confidence take an animal at 20yds and under but can stretch to 30-40 once I get more time to practice to there. So what gmu/area should I look into for elk? I've never been and wouldn't mind a cow or bull or spike. I have 10 points saved for quality elk but don't wanna use those till I know what I'm doing. Any help at all is appreciated. I'm thinking of Stevens county just because it's archery OTC tags.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

Stevens county would be a good bet.  However, If I had 10 points saved up I would think about hunting where I will be applying for my quality bull tag.  Get to know the area, practice calling in the big boys, and hopefully go home with a spike.   :twocents:

I've got 10 points and the closest elk I've seen was feeding in a feed lot off the highway a few hundred yards in wyoming. I need to get some kind of experience before using those suckers

IMO opinion that is why I would target one of the quality areas.  You will get way more action than you will anywhere in the NE Corner.  You need as many encounters as possible.  Likely won't even get one in the NE.  Again just my two cents.

:yeah:I would head to the Little natches or surrounding areas, lot's of archery permits and buy the time you get a couple years under your belt practicing, you'll draw for sure with 12+ points.  As long as you don't put in with me!
“In common with”..... not so much!!
