Should I take my skiff to Alaska?

Trying to decide if I should take my skiff to Alaska with me when I move this summer. Will be living in Seward with plenty of opportunities to fish off a bigger boat. I have a 12ft Alaskan deep v hulled skiff, anyone with experience have any suggestions, would it be useful? Or I am better offer selling it and buying some nicer hunting stuff?

While that's a nice steady skiff for our inland Puget Sound waters around here, on the salt water up there I think you might want one a bit larger in the 16' range. Even in a mild chop and wind you will have slow going with that one.
  We were in 16 footers last summer and at times even those did not seem big enough at times in protected waters around Ketchikan.

Really depends on what you want it for. Ocean fishing, no!  There are a lot of lakes and more inland waters where it may be useful depending on what you want to do. That being said you should be able to sell it up there for more than you could expect down here if it proves you won't use it there.

I lived in Sitka for 15 years and there were plenty of times I was out in a small skiff in the lakes but never much in the salt. Certainly would not have that for any kind of trolling but it would be a good close shore jigging boat.

You will definitely want a 15-16' minimum for running around in the salt, even in inland waters running the shorelines for deer/bear. The chop can be constant at times and the bigger boat will handle it better. Plus, you will be suprised how much a 45-50# halibut tips your boat when you get it alongside

Hopefully you'll be doing your own shipping. On my final move with the CG the moving company was generous enough to damage our furniture among other things. We ended up with new living room and bedroom furniture out of the final resolution.

Ditch the boat, Seward you want something that will be a bit sturdier.  Granted it is pretty protected waters also, but does come up quick.

I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get rid of it. It would be fine for Resurrection Bay silver fishing in the late summer. You won't be that far from the Kenai River. And it's nice to have a small skiff get to the beach  when you anchor out in your 24 footer while deer and bear hunting. Will work fine in many streams and most lakes too. I have used many such skiffs in the salt in Alaska. Obviously you need to be aware of the conditions and keep a good eye on the weather forecast. But there are many such skiffs in use in Alaska.
