Well the follies continue. I make the ridge in 2.5 hours and tank up on water. I work y way down the ridge towards camp and a cinnamon is feeding across the top. No canyons, no brutal pack outs, and it's ten minutes in. I take my pack off and lay probe, slam the range finder, 418.

Rack a shell in, take a few deep breaths...let out, let crosshairs settle just over the top of the back and....click. I jack the shell out and Mr. Bear is starting to realize something is up, he's no longer feeding but starting to walk towards timber.

I realize the bolt wasn't fully engaged, range again, I'm running out time, one more window.
Boom!

Missed.

He goes tearing off down the meadow and into the timber. I spent an hour looking for blood, smell, following tracks out, nothing.

I may, for some reason not be able to hit them, but finding them seems to be no problem...

The hunt continues.

Silk, I disagree with you: There are no follies in your Weneha 2015 hunt.  There is a reason that only 3 to 5 tags out of the 45 awarded ever get filled during the Spring.  Weneha is a darned difficult hunt.  Because you have cell phone service, we are able to participate blow-by-blow, and we can assure you that your effort is second to none.  As you well know, success in hunting is directly proportional to the hours spent in the field: You are doing your part, keep at it until the clock runs out.

Stellar performance thus far!

granted im not there anymore, but i was on the glass last round.
the ground is mostly decomposed granite in there and seems to soak up the hit without much more than a pftt of dirt. very difficult to call.

You shoot much at ranges over 400? Sounds like you may need to work on it a bit. Not trying to sound like a dick but once you get out past 3-400or so you really need to know what your rifle and load are doing. Little things start to make big differences . You using a scope with turrets or just holding over?

I have and did a good tuneup prior to season.  The major problem was that I blew all the time I had relaxing expecting that first shot to send. When it clicked and I realized my bolt wasn't down, I had pretty minimal time to reset.

I don't know what he's shooting but if he has a 250 yard zero, then many of the faster rifles would be 15" low at 400 and would do inside of 4" above and below line of sight out to 300.

Have you confirmed your zero since the season started? Since you already fired a shot you might want to send another for confidence since the areas disturbed.

Yeah, I'm desk jockeying. Sorry. :sry:

Sending you a PM.

sounds to me like the shot was rushed(because it had to be) you probably pulled the trigger harder than usual and just plain missed. Doesnt hurt to check gun if you think you wont be spooking to much but probably not needed. Good luck ive been anxiously watching the thread for when you do get one!
