I apologize ahead of time. I looked through the forum and couldn't find my exact question.

I'm new to bow hunting. Been practicing everyday and I am obsessed! I'm buying more arrows and I wanted to pick everyone's brain to make sure I am shooting the right ones.

I have a new Hoyt Faktor 29.5" draw 70#. I was told at the archery shop Gold Tip 300 spine arrows would be good for elk. I haven't bought broad heads yet, I've just been practicing with field tips. I'll probably get 100-125 gr broad heads.

My question is, are 300 spine the best option? Or should I look toward the 400 spine?

300s are good, 400s would be worse. 300s are a stiffer arrow which if you are drawing 70lbs at 29.5 arrow length should be spot on.

You will definitely be addicted after elk season if you get into them even if you dont shoot one. My first year my dad called in a bull to within 10 yards but we were hunting in super thick area and it came out on the wrong side of some trees. After that I was hooked. If you havent bought any calls i recommend buying some and start practicing now. It takes a while to get good at calling but worth the time to put into it. By elk season if you dont get bugling down real well but can cow call you might e better off not bugling if you feel like it doesn't sound anything like an elk. My wife loves all the practicing I do all year long......... To me your arrow spine sounds right. There are a lot of good different broadheads out there. Since you will be shooting pretty fast I would recommend getting a hardend tip head instead of cut on contact to punch through bone just incase you hit one to bust through it real well. I like my Shuttle T's but mostly cause they fly so consistent with my field tips and with each other. You may want to try a couple different ones if you can afford to do so to find one your bow absolutely loves. I love my shuttles but have heard good things about slick tricks. 340 would be ideal and with 125 s would be right at wieght as long as you don't cut them to short . 300 s with 125 s would work fine too .and well over min arrow wieght. I shoot 340 7595's with 20 grain inserts and 100 shuttle t,s at 30 inch draw right at 425 with lume nocks 70 lbs carbon overdrive.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I really appreciate it. I've rifle hunted since I was a kid but my passion is duck hunting. But there is something very relaxing and rewarding about shooting a bow/bow hunting. I'm really excited for this year!

300's are about right for your length/poundage. If you drop down to 60lbs you can get away with 400's most likely too. Always better to be a little on the stiff side

You might download the trial of Ontarget 2 (http://www.pinwheelsoftware.com/) and put your setup in, just to check.

340 at 30 in and 70 lbs is a bit underspined IMO.. I was shooting 340's at 27.5 and 70... you would need a 300 by any chart I can see.

According to the spine charts you correct . 300 would be recomended. My feeling is state legal and poundage play into my setup . Slightly under spined with good foc. Of course perfect tune plays into it . I shot Maxima hunters at 421 310 fps for a few years then switched to the 7595 gold tips they fly great .

My blackeagle Rampages are the toughest arrow I've ever shot.

You can choose either a brass HIT insert or stainless half out. They are the best elk arrow I've ever put together.
