Best way to get the ol man used to the little man...
« on: March 21, 2015, 04:53:50 PM »
So my wife and I have our pride and joy 3 year old WHOLE male black lab who was a single child till I brought home our little man last night.... Ol man wasn't too happy but seems to be coping with it today alright, he took a bite at little man last night not really at him but kind of what I'll hope/assume was a "hey your in my house I'm the boss" kind gesture. So what's your guys opinions or ways to get the ol man content with what we have done? Patch is a stellar hunter and we stud him out that's why we have kept him whole, now we brought little man in who is 6 weeks old which the intentions are so the ol man has a buddy and play friend.... How long will it take for him to get over it, how we do we help the ol man along with this so far puppy just does nothing but sleep and I know it's a jealousy sense mom was gone last night when I brought little guy home so it's been mostly little guy sleeping on my lap or next to me... I warned the ol lady when she gets home that our older boy patch is her first priority and play play play with his or go run him so there's not a even bigger jealousy vibe from patch. Then slowly aim her way towards her new pup?

Any advice I'll take I know patch is jealous, scared of pup, and I'd assume heart broken being there's someone new at home... He's a great boy and great with dogs normally small dogs as well being my mom has 4 little rug rat poms that are his best friends... Just any advice I'll take I know it's a jealousy thing for now and dominance as well I feel bad for both dogs right now.

Let me know what I can do k

I think folks put too many human traits to a dog.
They are dogs. I would business as usual only add the little dog.
The greatest chance of injury would be getting trampled by the older dog.

Make sure older dog gets some. Down time without puppy chewing on him.
They will work it out as time goes on. :twocents:

As long as one is the alpha, and the other accepts his role in the pack, there will be no problems.
If they both want to be alphas, they'll fight to determine it.
You should be fine for 3-4 years, until the younger pup thinks he's tougher than the old man.

The lab you already have needs to be aware that you! Are the alpha in the house. But that also means teaching the pup to not bite off more then he can chew.

I'm sure they will be fine then. I just went through the same situation last summer. They are best friends now.

Ya it's only been like just barely over 24 hours now so I figure I'd ask people's opinions if and get some knowledge before I do things the wrong way or what not.

It depends on the situation.   But typically if you have an adult canine and bring in a baby canine as long as the humans are in charge things go fine.  Allowing the adult male to say hey little snotbag your sharp teeth are not cool, is ok.  Eating the baby dogs face off just cuz he exists is not cool.  People in charge is the best solution.

I had the same sort of issue with my older female lab (RIP) who was very alpha around my new pup at the time. Most people have already nailed it but making sure they both know you are the alpha and they need to follow your rules is important. Cant let the old man bully the little guy just because which means youve got to enforce that policy with the old man. Enjoy your new pup!

I agree, my little yellow got both ears pierced from my older lab! Now they sleep on the same dog bed.
