I had a lady tell me once, "Fishing is fair because the fish chooses to bite the hook.  But hunting is not fair because the animal does not choose to be shot."    Wha'??
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Another word that has become detrimental simply because society as a whole no longer values word knowledge, is SPORTSMAN this word assumes hunting is a sport like Bball or football and as such it is then considered a mere dalliance.  What is meant to infer a person of character instead makes hunting sound like a game.

And comparing actual hunting on the ground in Washington to what you "see on tv" is an unfair comparison.

And then there is that other term back at the beginning "elitist" which divides and divides some more until the ranks are so broken there is no unified voice and the people in positions of authority can basically do whatever they want.

There are OTC rifle rut tags in other states such as Montana. Usually those tags are for units that are VERY remote or the animal populations are hard to find. You can go up in the Bob and hunt elk in September with a rifle. Just lace up your boots and hike 35 miles to get into the unit.

In other states like CO. their early rifle season is in early October when the rut is still going pretty good. I have hunted that season once with rifle years ago and it was great to have elk bugling. Most of the early season hunters there had not idea about calling so I don't think they had a huge advantage.
What you see on TV is a lot of these folks hunting on private ranches during early October where the elk are really nuts because there is not pressure on them. Or, they are in the back country hunting during early October.
Lots of folks think the elk are only rutting during September but it goes well into October when many states have rifle seasons.

Nor do they choose to get ripped apart and eaten alive by wolves and cougars, or die a slow painful death by disease or starvation, or run over and left to die a ditch.

I tell people who are ignorant about hunting that I'm the kindest killer that nature has to offer.

It's probably just your avatar that catches your thread the slack; not the subject. I can just imagine how my threads would go if I had the Steelers insignia as an avatar; by the way, Big Ben did score that touchdown.  :chuckle:
