7 year old german shorthair with possible patella issues
« on: April 23, 2015, 04:01:18 PM »
Last November i took my gsp to the vet cause he would randomly have pain in his right rear leg when he was running, it would randomly happen when playing fetch. He would yelp loudly and hold his leg up and then seem to go back to being somewhat normal but still showing that he had some pain.

The vet took xrays and said that it was arthritis. Fast forward to now and he is still having the same issue. Took him in for a second opinion and this vet is saying that it sounds like it is his patella and that he will have to sedate him to check it.

Anyone have any experience with a dog that has had patella surgery?.

No experience with the surgery but if you can afford it, pay for some rehab. It will speed the recovery process along by a lot compared to the DIY method normally done.

Basically it sounds to me  like cooper  has a tendon issue on his kneecap(patellar subluxation if I remember right),I had that same injury on my field trial dog years ago, because it is a tendon it takes along long time for it to heal due to mimimal blood flow in tendons. It took a year for my dog to heal up from it and in that year he wasn't allowed to run,he was kenneled in a 6x12 the entire time.My vet diagnosed it with his hands, unsedated by manipulating the dogs knee through it's range of motion and feeling the tendon. It's a good thing you've got a stand in with the new wirehair.

The vet said that cooper was tensing up too much so he would have to sedate him to feel it.
