This info is a bit dated but here it is.

A few years ago (back when Sportsmans was in Lacey still) I was in the market for a range finder. I wanted the best of both worlds as I was archery hunting again and also enjoyed shooting long range. Sportmans would allow you to take the units outside and test them side by side. Which myself and a friend as well as the salesman did. We tested the Leupold 1200, the Nikon unit of the same range against a Leica 900 and the Leica 1600.

Hands down the Leica 900 smoked the Leupold and Nikon units in all aspects.

We found it extremely difficult to get the Leupold and Nikon units to hit past 800 yards on the same target the Leica 900 would hit EVERY time.

As far as the Leica 1600.... well we couldn't find a target at a great enough distance to max the unit out. I have no doubt it will hit all of 1600 on a non reflective target.   

So basically it depends on what you need. If you need 1200 yard ranging capability then to me the Leupold is out as well as the Nikon 1200 (Nikon may have new products now that can compete but I just haven't looked in a while), but if 800 will do and you don't mind middle of the road glass clarity then it may be the way to go.   

I also don't believe the Leupold unit is completely water proof nor does it come with the same unconditional warranty as some of Leupolds other optics. (again this may have changed since I last looked into them though) 

I'm not bashing leupold I love there rifle scopes and have one on just about every rifle I own. Its just there lacking a little in the rangefinder category if you ask me.

My Leica rangefinders come built in both my 8x and 10x Geovids, but as far as their rangefinders capabilities and/or attributes, they are very clear, accurate and I've ranged several 1,300+ yard objects when necessary.  Prior to purchasing my Geovids, I owned 2 Leica bino's and 2 of the Leica 1200 rangefinders.  Again, flawless functioning rangefinders for several years of lots of use.  Amazing battery life, as well.  As an aside......selling the 2 bino's and 2 RF's and now only having to carry the Geovid and getting the same benefit of good glass and range finding ability all in one package, absolutely the best move that I ever made.

Rangefinders, in general, can save alot of boot leather, hunting time and sweat over the years and are as worthwhile and useful as any hunting accessory that's available to us........IMHO.

Just bought the RX-1200i TBR. After I use it a couple times I'll let you know what I think.

I don't have any personal experience with the 1200 but, I own two Leopold range finders. The first one I bought was ok (600). A couple years later I decided I wanted one with the angle compensater and a little more range. So I got the 750. I was not impressed. I have a hard time getting readings and I could get readings further out with my older one. I won't be purchasing another Leopold range finder.

+1. I bought a Leupold TBR as a backup, and was disappointed. Leicas have never disappointed.

So far I have been very pleased with the Leupy 1200. I have been able to get angle compensated ranges out to 1003 yds. It's very compact and simple to use. For those that can't afford the Leica $$ definitely check out this RF.

I've had my leica for at least 8 years, it's a 900.  it's reached out to over 1,200 yards. I wish it was a bit smaller for using when I archery hunt but quality is untouchable.
