Build your own boat?
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:05:25 AM »
Has anyone ever built their own boat? I decided to build one, only took me 12 years! I built a 16' fiberglass Drift Boat. A guy I new had some molds and having done a little glassing I jumped in. Molds were prepped and away I went. Started on the small parts first(decks, seat rails, seats) Then made the hull. Had 2 friend helping that day! A lot of work. Pulled the hull from the mold and started fitting the small parts. This was Feb. Mar. then didn't get to work on it till fall(Guy fishes Bristol Bay and builds gillnet boats). Fall time and he was never home cause he was building a boat somewhere else. Then first of heart problems. I did not see the boat for 5 years. Anyway got he boat to my house and started again, couple more years and more heart problems. started back on it and got it done! Launched it in Fish Lake for the first time May 10 2008. Here it is if I get the pictures to post

Your drift boat looks outstanding.

I have thought about it ALOT.  Have you seen the boats at this site, https://www.boatdesigns.com/departments.asp?dept=2

I am going to build the V Dory.  I hope it only takes me about 4 years, but we'll see.

My dad's best friend builds his own boats then they sail them around the Caribbean.  I've done some crewing on this boat its pretty sick.......There is nothing electrical on the boat.....No motor and navigation is done old school.... This boat was built by hand YES the entire thing :o

great looking boats...one of these days i'd love to build a wood drift boat. i have a glass lavro boat now, but love the wood boats. i'm a little afraid of running the white water with it though.

I have to admit I cheated alittle on it, I did not like the front deck that he had the mold for. No knee braces.LAvro. Had to cut and fit it for my boat. Thats why its a different color prepaint. :)

Great looking boat fishseeker.

I believe I used Glen L plans for the wood DB I built in high school.

That looks really nice. I've actually built 3 wood drift boats. No plans. Only took me a couple of months for each. Was actually easier than I thought. Way to much maintenance though. Now I just fish a glass boat.

I grew up on the coast in Ga and the guys that ran shrimp boats made theirs in their yards.  THeyd have boat building parties and make a shrimp boat in no time from glass and resin.

Im sure that someonw could host a boat building party and made a few boats one weekend.  Or maybe two.
