Kayak fishing questions
« on: April 22, 2015, 04:56:19 PM »
So we have decided that kayaking is now something my family does. I say this because we started talking about kayaks a few weeks ago and now there are 4 in my garage. I enjoy fishing and i enjoy kayaking so far, but I need some advise from people who do it. We bought recreation boats not whitewater boats, so I'm looking to fish smaller lakes here in the basin. Are there any major do's or don'ts that anyone would like to pass on, or any tips that would help a beginner. I need to figure this out because my wife says she wants to fish too, and I want her to enjoy it. Any way, sorry for the ramble and thanks for any advice.

I'm slowly doing the same thing. I've got a couple recreational kayaks, and am really intrigued at the designated "Fishing Kayaks." They're wider, designed for stability, and have lots of specifically designed area for storage and rod holders.

I'm not seeing many on the used market either.

There's a tv show on kayak fishing, they have a lot of their segments on youtube, it's worth a look.

I'll either be buying or building one soon!

Rain, I too am looking at the fishing models still. We bought the sit in equinox from costco and a pelican sit in for my youngest. I have a friend with a sit in fishing version that i am going to borrow at some point. I think that I will rent a sit on version this summer when we go to Wallowa Lake and try that.

Little Red: Above is a post that I started a few years back. I have the same kayak and it has been great. The only mods that I have done is add 2 rod holders to the back. I take that kayak out in the sound all of the time and catch crabs, links, rock bass, etc... You will get used to fishing out of it. Crabbing is great. Real easy to strap (2) pots to it (1 in front one in back) and then throw the live crabs in the rear hatch as its separated from you. Again for cheap kayaks these are a ton of fun and Ive had no problem fishing out of them. Yes its nice to have a $2,000 Hobie but my $150 craigslist special does me just fine. PM me with questions and if you want to go out. Ling season starts next Friday in MA10!
