Casting Help

I got my self a fly rod and want to learn how to use. Curious what the best way to practice casting is before I head out. I plan on heading over to the local sport fields where I have lots of room. Do they make practice fly's for casting, or is there something else I can use besides an actual fly?

tie a leader on with a little piece of red yarn tied to the end of it. DO NOT cast your line without at least a leader attached. you'll trash it.

When I learned, I practiced by closing my eyes and feeling the line straigten out and "pull" behind me before tossing the line forward. Go easy. Start small. Lots of help on the web...

it's all timing and physics. where do you live?
taking a lesson is not a bad idea if you are serious about it. there are certified casting instructors all over the place and can be found through the local fly shops.

I second the lesson, when I guided in Ak, I took some lessons before I went.. its great fun and easy to learn if you have any form of rythm.. its all about letting the rod do the work, you can also clip the hook off a fly and cast with that as well

I'm in SeaTac and may take a lesson. There is a guy at my company that is certified and works part time for the Avid Angler.

 go fishing and go often. Let the rod do the work and dont catch yourself in the back of the neck. It hurts when you get a big salmon fly in the dome.

Get some line out, pull back, from 9 to 1 oclock, accelerating from 0-to 60 (you dont have to have the speed correct, its just to show how fast the acceleration is), then stopping aburply. Once the line is moving backward, count 1,2,3 and go forward, 0 to 60 to 9 oclock. Use your elbow and schoulder. Not your wrist. Once moving forward, count again.

Al your doing is letting the rod load, each way, before changing direction. If you dont your line will pile up.

I work in Southecenter. I could show you in 5 minutes enough to get you a great start. You may roll cast in western wash more than an actual overhand cast. If brush is behind you. Your gonna be roll casting.

My building is big enough to do this inside. Let me know if you want to drop down the hill. Im here Monday thru Thursday. It would have to be about 11:45 am or so. Any day.
