So I just recently started following this trapping thread. I contacted George Brady an am on my way to obtaining my trappers license. I know I'll learn about a lot in the class but was wondering if you guys can share some more info. How do you kill the animal's in the traps? What do you do with your furs? How much space do I need to process the furs? Where can I learn about fleshing an tanning?  Where to buy traps? What tools will I need? Just trying to get a head start as I'm growing more excited with all your posts. Thanks
Don't forget your spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch.

Stew I like to buy my gear from F & T Trapper supply.  http://www.fntpost.com/Categories/Trapping/  Discussing dispatch methods is best done face to face, not on an open forum.   :twocents:  You will probably always want MORE space, but right now I am getting by with just a few square feet.  Not because I want to but because I have no choice.  Eventually I'll have at least a 10 X 16 shed just for trapping.  Tools you need, a good fleshing knife, apron, gloves, fur comb, and some drying boards are really nice.  Waders, gloves are handy.  Go to the convention this summer and you can see first hand what you will need and be able to buy it on the spot of you want.  YouTube has some great videos on skinning, fleshing and boarding furs.

Thanks machias. I'm reading through all the threads now gaining as much info as possible. I'll look at F&T trapper supply right away.

I think a lot of your questions will be answered when you take the Trapper Education class.
Especially for new trappers I think you will be best served in buying traps by coming to the Summer Rendezvous. Even if you decide not to buy from one of the dealers there you get a chance to see the products and talk with people about what works. We usually have from 3 to 5 guys selling new and used equipment.

We try and have some fur prep demos at our get togethers but you will likely not get any on tanning. Most demos are geared towards selling raw furs.

Even tho I don't trap myself, I am excited to see new blood coming into such a great sport!  Best of luck, hope you have a great time, learn from some of these dedicated trappers, and possibly make a buck or two!

If you ever get out to the spanaway/tacoma area I've got a brand new coon size trap sitting in my garage I'd be willing to sell.
Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

Ya, I will.
Not to bust your bubble but before you think about going into business doing nuisance control work you should know something about wildlife and differently nuisance wildlife.

Why is it when I hear that somebody goes out and get their trapping license the next thing they want is a nuisance license?   :yeah: :bdid:

I've been in the business of trapping for 40 years and nuisance business business for 30+ of those years.  Take two or three years and learn first before jumping into that line of work.  You have no ideal  what your going to deal with and its not all about trapping.  Trapping should be the last resort to removing a nuisance animal.

Sound advice and point taken. Its experience an guidance from guys such as yourself that I hope to gain knowledge from for the next steps.
Just know I may not even buy my license this year if I can't gather together everything Ineed. Id like to be organized and productive once I start trapping during the season so I'm going to learn the ropes in my back yard first. My post about nuisance is a lot of looking forward to be as prepared as possible in case I have what it takes to trap well. Hope to make the rendezvous an see you there. I'll be the wet behind his ears guy asking lots of questions.  :hello:
