Anyone spend any time in Alpine?
« on: April 21, 2015, 10:33:18 AM »
Hey fellow hunters. My buddies and I are trying to figure out our game plan for this years hike with bows. One option is the Alpine unit. I have never been there. Has anyone spent any time in that unit? How did your hunt or hike up there go? If so, what is the terrain, weather, etc like (open, thick, steep, cold)? Any info would be much appreciated.

I hunted around diamond lake once.  Saw some sign but no animals. The area is easy to walk around in, some openings here and there.  Not as wet as west side. I have heard most elk like to stay at suncadia now, instead of the wilderness.

Did you see any other hunters around the area? The hunting reports make it look pretty sparse. I'm gonna go check it out soon. Would you say the area is more similar to the westside than the eastside?

Steep in places, flat in places, dark timber, open meadows, open timber, sheer cliffs, rock faces, day temps mid 60's-70's, overnight below freezing, sun and sleet at the same time, deer, bear, elk, grouse, lots of access points, lots of tree huggers, nature lovers etc. Havn't been up there in years since it got crowded. Find some place far away from trails, do some bush whacking and get in deep. Good luck.

Honestly I spend a lot of time backpacking in the area year round and do not see much game.

Lots of game there if you are willing to get off the beaten path. Do some scouting and stay away for the lakes as those attract the people. You should have a good time and have the opportunity at a nice trophy.
The only man who never makes a mistake, is the man who never does anything!!
The further one goes into the wilderness, the greater the attraction of its lonely freedom.

I spend a ton of time in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, mostly back packing and scouting/ fishing a great place to explore, not a very good place to have any success hunting. Lots of factors come into play, heat in the day, I shot a deer 10 miles in one year and bagged it up along with 1000 yellow jackets, that was the last critter I killed in the wilderness.

I was up there Easter weekend for fishing and visiting the g-ma and g-pa in Leavenworth and hiked up the mountains bordering the alpine like 400 yards away from the alpine (currently mission) and found a few does and 2 big bodied Bulls! Of course you could never see them again in a thousand years in the same place but they're there. It's definetly a tough hunt and would take a lot of commitment And would be much easier if you hunted a different unit but there are elk shot out of there every year by icicle outfitters I believe.
