Would you go scouting this weekend?
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:49:24 AM »
My dad and I had planned on going on our first scouting trip to NE Oregon for the three day weekend. We have never stepped foot in the area and were hoping to spend the weekend driving and hiking around in some of the areas that we have located on the maps. The weather report is calling for rain pretty much all three days and we are trying to decide if we want to make the 6 hour drive each way since we might not get to hike much plus we have no idea if the roads are the type that get greasy and slippery. On top of that, we had planned on just bringing little tents to sleep in so we could be mobile. What would you guys do?

I'll be under a cabin re-doing a concrete and post foundation system all weekend. Given the choice I would be hiking in the rain.  :chuckle:
Dress warm and pack blue skies with you.

6 hour drive without Memorial Day weekend traffic.
I think I've become allergic to travel on Memorial Day Weekend. That'd be the sole reason I wouldn't go. I hate that traffic.
Maybe it wouldn't be too bad since you don't have to come across the passes.

I'd go..... Once you're there you'll be glad you did. Traffic is traffic, time spent scouting (and with your dad) are gold!

It has been rainy here lately, hope it shapes up for you guys.

Our plan is to leave at like midnight Friday or later so I don't think traffic would be an issue and then we were going to come back later Sunday afternoon or night. We also wouldn't have the major passes to contend with but its still a long drive and expensive on fuel. Our main concern is the rain and how it effects the roads, plus the hiking/camping aspect. I have tons to do around my house but at the same time, it sure is nice to get out of town on holiday weekends because they get crazy around here.

What area generally and I can ask the guys here at work if they have any knowledge of road conditions. A  few of em' are hunting fools and may know.
