DIY Silnylon Tarp Shelter
«

Finished my first Silnylon project. Measures 10' wide 9' long. Uses trekking poles for support. Got it set up today. Can't wait to get it out and see how it performs!

how did you sew the long seam? seems like every time I try to sew over about 18" I get problems with it felling right, and bunching up or sliding around unless I use a TON of pins to hold it, which makes for slow going.

Yeah, give us some more information to help us put together something similar. I was just thinking this morning how much I hate hauling around my 12 pound tent on backpacking trips.

I used a double sided tape, Dritz brand. It's a double sided tape that dissolves and washes away the first time it gets wet. Found it at JoAnns fabric store. Then as I sewed I kept the fabric pulled taught. The tape just barely sticks to the Silnylon, but enough to get the job done.

Shoot me any questions you might have. I watched several videos online, then made it as simple as I could. Biggest tip, lock your cats in another room. They play havoc on laid out Silnylon and templets!

When researching this, did you come across any other plans? I was hoping to making a pyramid style tarp with a center pole, but I've searched quite a bit and can't find any plans for one.
Would you mind showing a close up of the corner?

I didn't see anything on a pyramid style tarp. There was one on Rokslide of a guy that made a tepee style tent. Here's a pic of the finished corner and the tarp all bagged up.

Did you order the silnylon online or buy it local? I wanted to do this but more of a bivy style than a fly. I found some online just not sure where I should order it from or if I can buy local to see the size of what im buying. Nice work!

I got it at Seattle fabrics. Not sure if anyone else carries it. They stock all sorts of colors and types. They also carry all the cord, thread, nylon, and D-rings. Might not mention your a hunter though. The atmosphere changed dramatically when I did😀

Looks good. Only difference we would do is knock grommets into the corner versus the sewn in loops.

I like it... Might have to stop in there for a look see. What type of sewing machine do you have? Is it anything special?

Not anything special. Used a singer heavy duty to sew it. Gutermann brand polyester thread. Regular machine should be able to handle it just fine. May have to slow down a bit in the corners where your going through several layers of material
