That is a really well done tarp.  It would also work well as a cover for a hammock.

Tell us about the specific material that you used.  9' x 5', in 2 pieces, right?  That looks just right to me, but did the fabric store have other widths?  Do you recall the brand name or materials specifications of the silnylon?

Thanks! Yes it is 5' wide strips and I ended up getting 7 yards so I would have some extra for bags etc. the fabric is 1.3 oz Rip stop. I don't think the store carries any other widths.

Something I always wondered about floorless tents.
I use a klymit sleeping pad.  I would be afraid of poking a hole in it.  Do you carry another fabric to put on the ground?  After bringing an extra tarp or something would it not be lighter to just have a tent with a floor?
Just asking.

Ross, when alpine climbing I will use a therma rest for the insulation and sleep in a tent. But for hiking or hunting I use a roll up pad, and thus sleep on sharp sticks or rocks without problems. Perhaps this could work for you?

Outstanding!  Thanks for sharing the info.  I love ultralight backpacking/hunting and may have to try the tarp thing sometime.  Right now I still use a Tarptent and a  sixmoons lunar solo.  I want to start making my own stuff some time.

I have $110 invested. That includes the fabric, Thread, 6 MSR mini ground hog stakes, and 25' of para cord. The sleeping pad I use isn't inflatable, so I don't worry about poking holes in it. I know some guys carry a light sheet of TYVEX to protect their pads
