Tips for landing fish on a shallow rocky tapered bank?
« on: June 07, 2015, 08:06:38 PM »
So I have fished a couple spots almost exclusively for many years for steelhead. Both spots have a shallow tapering bank of river rock. There is no place to lead the fish to that has deeper water to net them. I have thought about trying a net and lay it on the bottom in the 6-8 inch deep water and trying to slide the fish over it but I have watched fish get lost this way as the rig tangles in the net in the shallow water. Everyone just slides the fish up and grabs it or kicks it up onto the bank. But a lot of times this extends the fight by 5-10 minutes in the last 2-3 feet to the bank because being that shallow and close they always get the energy for "one last run" and they roll their nose into the rock. 90% of the fish I see lost at these spots are at the very end of the fight as they try to get the fish on the bank. I have been lucky for years till this last Friday, the first time it happened to me. The fish was so done and I had struggled with it at the last 2 feet of water for almost 10 min because I couldn't get it up on the rocks without it flipping around, then the hook popped out. It was so tired it sat there almost long enough for me to grab it by hand. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for landing a fish on this kind of bank? I thought about a hook on the end of a stick like a gaff but not pointed, just enough to get under the gill plate and pull it up. I know gaffs are not legal in this situation but would a rounded hook similar to it be legal do you think?

Some places are tough to land fish for sure. Esp. summer runs that just never give up on light tackle- good recipe for losing fish at the bank. Hey, at least you're hooking fish!

In the situation you described, I see 2 possibilities (assuming you can't go up or downstream to a better landing spot):

1. Net: If you have a partner, try to net it before you bring it in to the really shallow water. Tougher to do on your own, but still maybe possible.

2.  Tail: Tire the fish out well and lead it in toward the shallower water. Rather than backing up the bank with the fish behind in the water, get out far enough so you can lead the fish in front of you.
At the point where the fish scrapes rocks 2 things will happen- if he really doesn't like it and still has the spunk he'll probably take off- or he will accept the shallowness because he is done and lay there somewhat calmly for a few seconds at least. Maintain tension from the rod on the fishes head, come from behind and grasp the section right above the tail. Easier with a glove or rag for a better grip. Also easier with a heavier leader and a shorter rod. Being behind the fish gives you a chance if he starts kicking again or the leader breaks or whatever. You can still scoop the fish toward the bank and I have seen boots put a few on the bank in that scenario.

Regarding the gaff idea, I'm pretty sure a rounded hook similar to a gaff would definitely be considered a gaff.
If you're close enough to gaff it, the tailing should work (it does take practice).

This vid shows the basic idea, but the execution leaves something to be desired. I would not grab the rod like he does. Looks like a longer rod, which makes timing more important.

Assuming its legal. Your 200lbs. It's 12lbs.  Slide it up the rocks, go to yer knees and kill it. Or break out the needle nose and release it!..... In the water of course. :chuckle:

  Unless I'm in a boat there is no netting steelhead, DV or salmon.  Just be careful not to break your rod. Also want to watch getting the fish too close to your waders if in an area you can use treble hooks!  Wear a rag wool fingerless glove and you'll have plenty of grip.

Thanks for the advice guys, I really should get hip boots. Going full chest waders is a pain for this area since its so shallow anyway, rubber boots might be high enough though.

It's summer, and it's hot. Get wet! Wading boots with an extra pair of socks work great.
