This will be my first year hunting the westside for elk have done the east side for years amd felt like it was time to change things up for the family while putting in for draws we put in for areas surrounding mount st helens and the whiteriver well we all drew a big not selected, no its time to choose and get scouting the hancock permit is 250 and thw Wayerhaiser one is like 150 I think im in spanaway so Issaquah is much closer and I feel like could get morw scouting in. Im just super torn my dad kind of let me and my brother figure it out this year and I dont want to let him down I want to get him an elk so bad. So with that said any info , tips, or insight would help thank :dunno:you again
I should alsowe are hunting muzzleloader seasons

I don't know Issaquah at all but I'm pretty sure Winston has more elk, even though the numbers are way down due to hoof rot and all the cow tags they've had in there the last few years. I think the $160 Weyerhaeuser permit is a pretty good value. Gives you tons of area to hunt and tons of roads to drive.

Issaquah is good if you have property to hunt. The few public accesses are busy and you may not see any elk for seasons but just sign that they were once there. Winston is probably your best bet but there are very few secret locations as its the most popular unit on the West side. If you learn how the elk respond to pressure and their travel corridors you can be very successful. I know people who sit on the same log year after year and eventually find success. It's a busy place but you look hard enough you can find spots.

The problem with the Issaquah unit is small amount of public land. Mostly private. As for Hancock there is only a small portion that is the Issaquah unit. Also Hancock's White River forest was bought by the muckleshoots. Tiger mountain south side of 18 is good but lots of people in there. Hikers, bikers, and hunters take your pick. I would go Winston.

In my experience issaquah is a waste of time. A lot of private land and not a lot of elk compared to other areas.

You can be very successful in the Issaquah unit if you take the time to learn it. There is public land, often times just small parcels, however some nice elk have been taken off of those small parcels.

Hunted winston for 15 yrs heading east this yr. Hunt Green mt. on the port blakley land. 100 line side. Hoof rot has hit the area bad the last few yrs. But there still there, not like they use to be. Just dont get to trigger happ on the first bull, if hes walking hard on his front legs and has a hell of a head nod when he walks hes got the rot, messes up the meat pretty bad. So if there limping and you can see hip bones they got it.
