family backpacking tent
« on: June 26, 2015, 11:42:52 PM »
I already not looking forward to it, because I know its going to be expesive or heavy, likely both, and crowded, but I need to find a "backpacking" tent for 5 people. 3 of them are little people, 4-9 y.o. so I think I am just going to go with a 4 man.  Taking the family on some short easy over night trips to fun destinations this summer and they all want to cram in to a tent together. I dont think this will last so I dont want to buy something very expensive. Im fairly confident it will get destroyed by the time I am done with it and was looking at some on amazon for under $150. Even cheaper would be nice but I dont want to cary the extra 20 pounds! So any ideas? Or just settle on one of these?

5 people in a 4 man tent sounds miserable to me. Just how many people comfortably fit 8 long guns into an 8 gun safe? Can it be done? Sure. But be prepared to sleep on top of each other.

We already do! Sometime between 1 and 2 am my 4 yo gets up to pee. Cant ever find his way back to his room apparently and climbs in our bed. Then around 4 the 9 yo makes his way in. Then by morning the 7 yo is in there, and eventually i wake up and get the baby and we all spend another 30 min in bed. Until the wife cant handle being squished anymore.  Worst case scenario, i will sleep outside. But the kiddos and wife can fit anywhere!

Of the three you have links to, the Mountain Smith is the only option in my opinion. The other two are way too heavy. Keep in mind, when the manufacturer says "4 man tent", it doesn't mean 4 people can sleep in it. Usually 3 at most.

I know a jackwagon who hauled a Coleman 4 person tent into the Henry Jackson Wilderness on his first backpacking trip, by himself.  Talk about colossally bad ideas. Gotta start somewhere i guess  :chuckle:

I bought an Alps Mountaineering Lynx 4 on sale for $100 and it only ways about 8lbs. I was in the worst rain storm I have ever been in and stayed dry. For the money I think it is an excellent value.http://www.midwayusa.com/product/232186/alps-mountaineering-lynx-4-dome-tent-76-x-86-x-44-polyester-brown-orange-and-white

Thanks atfulldraw! If i had a little more time for shipping I would probably have gone with that one and saved $35. I got the mountainsmith genesee 4p from amazon. $145 but garanteed here on Wednesday which I need. It looks like the one you posted has a larger vestibule area and is a little more rectangle, 8'6"x7'6" as opposed to 8x8 like the genesee. Both of those features would have been nice though it is about a pound heavier.  O well. If I ever need another I will probably look at that one.
I will post on here how the Mountainsmith Genesee 4 does after my trip. Wish me luck guys...  :yike:
