Bear Cub Distress Hand Call
« on: July 10, 2015, 04:06:19 PM »
What's everyones recommendation for the best bear cub distress hand call? I'm not interested in electronic call recordings because I don't really want to shell out the money for an E-Caller. I've been googling trying to find a hand call but the bear cub distress seems pretty unpopular. Any recommendations would be great.

For straight cub distress you can't go wrong with one of Bearmanric's calls.

For more vocalizations I would suggest this call by Woods Wise.  https://www.woodswise.com/catalog/product/ww08150

I just recommend a Jackrabbit distress call for calling in bears anytime of the year. Cheap and effective $8.00 Primos call.

It's frustrating I can't compete with a call made in China. My calls are $35.00 I just can't compete. Right now I'm  Michigan  making call part's. Things like this makes me want to retire. Try hard to make people hapy with my calls. Rick

Well can I buy one of your bear cub distress calls before you retire? Lol. I was curious how I go about ordering one of your calls, not a Primos.

If you want a bear cub call only. It would look like this. With a black exaust tube like a Buck grunt. Gives it a sweet cub sound. This is the call I called in a cougar and bear on my spring bear hunt.  If you click on my banner it will take you to my website. Click on the left the custom calls x go to closed reeds calls and order. I will be back home the 21 St and will be making more bear calls. Rick

I recommend that particular call because it is a call you can buy on a budget. Most hunters don't have alot of $ lying around kids, wife, bills, etc. I hate the fact the calls are made in China and not the USA. I just said that call because Ive used it and it works. Lets be a grown up next time with our response please and thank you. And I will stick with Primos, but you do make a perdy(pretty) call.

Knowing the huge amount of goodwill Rick has shared with this website makes it a pleasure to buy calls from him. Handsome woodwork incorporated into quality calls. He is always willing to share good hunting stories and provide hunting information. Can't put a price tag on what he delivers.

I hear you guys, hell I may even buy one. They look of great quality. I was just trying to talk of a bear call that worked for me in the past. I by no means was trying to take a shot or stir any pots. I bet these are truly great calls.

I have known Rick for over 30 years, His calls work!!! He tries them out himself. He has called bears for my son and other people. Rick is a damn good guy and his calls work. When you have a beef with a Primos call, who you gonna call?? I'll call Rick and he will fix my call, everytime.

I've got 3 of Rick's calls myself and can't say enough about both the quality and beauty of each of them. I plan on getting a couple more when he gets back in town. They're kind of like knives and guns; you can't have too many!

What's everyones recommendation for the best bear cub distress hand call? I'm not interested in electronic call recordings because I don't really want to shell out the money for an E-Caller. I've been googling trying to find a hand call but the bear cub distress seems pretty unpopular. Any recommendations would be great.

Buy Rick's basic distress call and go hunting.  The video demo of him calling is an excellent start if you are new at this.

Having said that, the basic jack rabbit distress sound (very similar to Rick's bear distress) is probably the most versatile of any call sound in N. America.  Many brands and custom makers produce it under many labels such as cub distress, fawn distress, snowshoe hare, etc.   You can blow it differently for cub bawls than rabbit distress, fawn bleats etc.  I've got an old Weems All Call in jack rabbit distress voice that has called about 20 species.  Primos Bear and (?) is good, Modern Calls jackrabbit 101, etc. etc.  I like a call that will fade to a whimper moan without cracking, and will start such a moan softly with almost no air pressure, as well as go loud.  You are more likely to get that with a custom call.

The exact sound is the least critical factor in calling almost any animal, though few people believe that, especially when we are new at it.  If you are in the ballpark for sound, it will work if the rest of the factors are in place.  Having a bear within hearing range is a critical factor!   :chuckle:

Spring for Rick's call unless you are a starving student!  :chuckle:  I was a starving student when I agonized in 1966 about whether to spend the $7.00 for my Weems.

Many of us on here have had the pleasure of meeting Rick let along hunt with his calls. Anyone wanting to consider a call should do it. Can't find much of a nicer guy that is as passionate about his calls as he is hunting bears. I'll share a campfire and a round with him anytime.
