Obama admin looks to ban some Social Security recipients from owning guns

The Obama administration wants to keep people collecting Social Security benefits from owning guns if it is determined they are unable to manage their own affairs, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The push, which could potentially affect millions whose monthly disability payments are handled by others, is intended to bring the Social Security Administration in line with laws that prevent gun sales to felons, drug addicts, immigrants in the United States illegally, and others, according to the paper.

The language of federal gun laws restricts ownership to people who are unable to manage their own affairs due to "marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease” – which could potentially affect a large group within Social Security, the LA Times reported.

If Social Security, which has never taken part in the background check system, uses the same standard as the Department of Veterans Affairs – which is the idea floated – then millions of beneficiaries could be affected, with about 4.2 million adults receiving monthly benefits that are managed by “representative payees.”

The latest move is part of the efforts by President Obama to strengthen gun control following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.

Critics are blasting the plan, saying that expanding the list of people who cannot own guns based on financial competence is wrongheaded.

The ban, they argue, would keep guns out of the hands of some dangerous people, but would also include people who simply have a bad memory or have a hard time balancing a checkbook.

The background check for gun ownership started in 1993 by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, named after White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was partially paralyzed after being shot in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Gun stores are required to run the names of potential buyers through a computerized system before every sale.

The ban wouldn't keep the guns out of any dangerous person. Those people are called, criminals.

"immigrants in the United States illegally"

wouldn't it be much easier and shorter to simply say "illegal alien"?  :dunno:

To someone who thinks we need the government running our lives, like my sister, this move would seem to make sense. He's sure crafty. I've got to give him that. :bash:

If they are deemed 'incapable of owning firearms' I wonder if that would also apply to voting?

I knew those who support the begening point of this slippery slope; this is where this would end up, and the ticker is this isn't even the bottom of the hill on this slope, theres way more the GOv can and will do with what they have already. and people keep saying all this is nothing but a conspiracy theory   >:( >:(
People always make fun of they're coming to take your guns and well here you go exactly what they're doing. Disarmament by Law! >:(

1.  Get people dependent on federal money.
2.  Use that money to blackmail them into what you want them to do.

Same thing has happened for generation with the highway money.  Don't play by Uncle Sam's rules for education?  Don't get your highway money.

Holding the check book is a form of power, the more you depend on money from the feds, the less power you have over your own life.

I believe it happened (Sandy Hook)that wasnt my point. The same group huh,now that was funny. let me laugh real quick. These groups wouldnt feel the way they did if the news, mainly CNN didnt get caught lying so much,There are so many examples of it I wont even get into it,Its because of all the lies that they told about that tragedy that the conspiracy theorists even dought it,They lied about being in the war zone back in 90 and 91,wouldnt admit to it until several years later. They lied about how many shooters, they lied about what gun was used they lied so much causing the theory to begin with. They lie to get ratings, they lie for the lib Gov. that we have, they lie no matter who it hurts. They dont apologize either. For any of their lies or the anchors that do it.

There's quite a large group that also say that GW Bush (Or Cheney) was behind the attacks on 9/11. Just because a bunch of people think something doesn't make it so.

So you believe that the government is capable of pulling off a massive hoax involving hundreds (at least) of civilians, in the age of social media and keeping them quiet; but they aren't capable to using that hoax to make any sort of meaningful gain on gun control?

A trustworthy friend of mine lost a cousin at Sandy Hook. Though I agree there are some well done videos out there pushing this conspiracy along. We cannot join in. Back to the facts at hand, Obama is a dirt bag.... and yet another misguided move is trying to be pushed through. Ridiculous, I will be watching this one unfold no doubt.

To my US Representative, Jaime Herrera Buetler:

Hi Jaime,

The President is planning to use the BATFE and FBI to confiscate firearms from millions of Social Security disability recipients in direct violation of our 2nd Amendment. A blanket ban on guns for those recipients whose payments are administered by someone else has no basis in either an increased number of reported gun violence incidents involving these people or a rule of law which allows blanket bans of gun ownership for targeted groups of people. This is a thinly-veiled attempt at gun confiscation. Please refer to the LA Times article: http://www.latimes.com/nation/politics/la-na-gun-law-20150718-story.html#page=1

Jamie, these incessant attacks on American liberties provided by the U.S. Constitution must be stopped by Congress. The President's utter disregard for our individual rights is reprehensible and I implore you to send a strong and clear message to the Executive Branch that our law enforcement agencies are tasked with protecting America's law abiding citizens, not relieving them of their rights under the Constitution. These are not the personal police forces of the President. They work for us.

At your earliest convenience, please let me know how you plan to deal with this latest assault on our freedoms. Thank you so much for your continued work on our behalf.

Most Sincerely,
(Pianoman)

Yep social media

Mags, I remember some dud on the forum here posting repeatedly in 2011 about how great Obama was and that he was really super duper pro- gun and anyone who thought otherwise was a misguided kook, trailer trash, dumb redneck, conspiracy nut job.

yep social media- some people go on there to troll and pretend they are someone they are not - like an anti-gun, anti-hunting  individual posing on a hunting site. Imagine that Mags :chuckle:
