DIY Ozonics Ozone Generation
« on: February 18, 2015, 10:49:57 AM »
So, ozonics is super expensive, but making Ozone is not rocket science.  I decided to try to build my own.  I estimate I'm 2 weeks away from an ozone generating unit that I deem nearly equivalent to the name brand "Ozonics" for <$75 in parts.

Some things to note on this build:
1) The generation of ozone via Corona Discharge is power hungry.  You need to make LESS ozone, not more.  I expect that somewhere around the 200-500 mg/hr of ozone is more than enough.

2) My unit will use the same batteries that a 12v cordless drill uses and I'm shooting for 4 hours of battery life

3) The trickiest part is ensuring that you have a step-up transformer capable of delivering 3-5 kV to the actual ozone generation part

4) You all can thank me when I'm done.  Maybe I should sell these things.

5) The test tube version is a home-built generator, whereas the white one is a Chinese machine made version.  Seriously, this is pretty simple.  Don't let Ozonics let you think there's some kind of magic in there.

6) OZONE GENERATION WORKS for scent blocking and removal.  I've had great success with downwind whitetail using ozone generation in the past.  Read the field and stream article: http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2014/07/does-it-work-ozone-scent-control-vs-drug-sniffing-dog

Very interesting.....will be curious as to how your build goes.

Yeah, I've already learned a few things.  First of all, finding the right box is crucial and I'm not convinced I have the right ones, looking for ideas.  If I had a 3D printer, that'd be the way to go.  Also, I wanted to go SUPER quiet with the fan so I went with a 120mm computer fan.  The good news is that it makes virtually zero noise, but the bad news is that the act of generating ozone isn't silent anyway.  Also, the 120mm fan is a little big for my box.  I'm going to go with a higher RPM 80 mm fan (a little louder) and use a commercially available 200 or 500 mg/hr generator.  I'm convinced that I can get 4 hours of run time using my knock-off Hitachi Ni-MH battery with that setup.

So in summary, there's no doubt I can put it together and that I'll generate ozone, but it may look like guts on a fence the first time around.  I'm not sure what mg/hr I was producing with my test tube home built, but it was plenty to smell the ozone immediately.  I speculate that ozonics is running about 200mg/hr.  Their extended life battery is about 10 more watt hr than the ni-mh battery I have, but at $110, they should be.

Also, D-Rock, you jealousy over my science is quite obvious and is a bad look on you. :IBCOOL:

Those 3D printers are real cool! Maybe someone here on the site has one?

most my whitetails come in from downwind. I use nothing and was only winded 1 time in 23 days sitting this year and winded once last year in 20+ days sitting.

The upwind deer you never see.  They turn tail before they come into view.

I've never worried about it a ton in the NW, but I was hunting in Texas and they're wary as h@ll there.  They'd wheeze at you from 100 yards out downwind and scare the ones out of the feeder in front of you.  Perhaps they're more worried about humans/hunters than places here, but I think it proves that they can smell you and can make the decision on what to do from there.  We were using scent lock clothing and special deodorant and everything and they'd still wind us.  Using the Ozonics, nobody was winded.

Is it perfect, absolutely not, but after using it I do believe it works and if it were only $75, whats the harm?  Only good for stand locations, but when you don't have the benefit of being able to move around, you might as well set up your stand for the highest chance of success possible.

Not to knock the hunting you're doing, but perhaps the reason there were 20 and 23 days of sitting is partially due to being winded without your knowledge?  There are less deer here than in Texas, which I understand could lead to longer sets, but wouldn't you like to have every advantage?  To each their own, but I'm convinced enough that these work that I'm dinking around with trying to build a cheaper one. :dunno:

I just wanted to revisit this and share that I finished my first DIY ozonics.  It works on a 12v drill battery.  Runs for ~6 hours or so on a charge.  Pretty similar in size to existing Ozonics options.  Apparently Ozone isn't good for you, but my whole house smells like it.

I cant wait to try it out on the whitetail masses down in Texas.

If you're interested in trying this, let me know.  I probably have some pointers.  This can be done for ~$65 with soldering and a dremel tool.
