Where to hang meat NE?
« on: July 22, 2015, 08:09:03 AM »
I need some help. I'm looking for a place with a walk in cooler to hang a moose this fall. Either a butcher or someone who rents cooler space to hunters. The tag is for the Selkirk unit. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

It's usually cool enough in Oct that we hang meat outside overnight and people head out in the morning for home.

Thank you. My dad and the tag holder have been hunting whitetails over there for 30+ years but they always go in November so they just hung them outside. The tag holder is a butcher so he hasn't had to worry about finding a meat processor either. :chuckle: we're going over there for the opening week.

We always hang em outside at that time. I plan to build a cooler but haven't done it yet and too busy this summer to get it done this year.

Two of the local meat cutters we used have quit. There are a couple other guys around, if I can find their contact info I will post it.

Thank you. If we can get away with hanging them outside we will. But it will be nice to have a back up plan just in case it's really hot.

I live on the wet side.  I got tired of looking for a cool place to hang deer and elk.  I bought two old refrigerators.  Last season at one point we had meat from a cow elk and two deer in them.  Will easily keep meat cool.  Two refer's  don't take up much room in my shop.

Thanks. Very true. However we'll be hunting on the opposite side of the state from where we live so not really and option.

For $3,600 you could have this:

http://www.koolabuck.com/Koola-Buck-Portable-Meat-Cooler-p/VCPW-1.htm

If it were me and the forecast was looking warm, I would pack our Honda 2k generator, our small window type ac unit, a few tarps and some duct tape.  Pretty sure that would work virtually the same, at least to cool it 20-20 degrees or so.

I live on the west side as well. Last year I shot a cow moose in the Mt. Spokane south unit and tried to find a butcher up there that I could pay to hang it for one night to
cool before my trip home. No one I contacted offered that so I went to wallmart and bought about $50 dollars worth of crushed ice and layered it with the quarters. It worked
really well and when I got home most of the hadn't melted even after an 8 hr. trip.
