Anyone here have Springers?
« on: July 24, 2015, 12:27:56 AM »
I lost my lab a couple months ago and my GWP is starting to show his age. I think I have another year or two hunting him but feel I need to start the search for a new pup. From what I have been learning it sounds like a springer would fit the bill nicely for the family and hunting. Most of my bird hunting is upland, I rarely hunt waterfowl anymore and if I do the other guys have water dogs.

I'm looking for someone who has a Springer, or a few, so I can get a feel for them. I would help with training or would like to watch them hunt, whatever works out for timing.

I am in the Shelton area but don't have a problem traveling a reasonable distance.

If anyone is willing to show off their dogs or knows a breeder/trainer I sure would appreciate any help.

Thanks

I have a Springer; he loves the water as much as my prior Chesapeake. However, a vest is  necessary for cold water. Springers are HIGH ENERGY and very fun to hunt with, but they need constant exercise. They are great with kids and your wife will probably spoil one due to their spaniel personality. Unfortunately, two types of Springers exist, show-type and field-type. Definitely look for a Springer out of field-type breeding. Most of the negatives you hear on Springers are about the show-type dogs.

 :yeah:

My dad had a springer he used for duck and field.  Loved my kids.  I bought him a vest for Christmas because we were on the coast in the winter and he didn't look happy once we had to sit and wait.  He died recently and my dad is getting a new pup from a new litter out of Idaho.  Field bread is the way to go.

I sent you a couple of PMs. Like others have said, Field Breds are the way to go.

Thanks guys.

I neglected to mention field bred, I need a bird dog.

Getting exercise around here is not a problem for a dog, it seems to be for me though, we live on a lake and the bumpers are flying pretty regularly. I also road my hunting dogs as often as possible to try to keep up their stamina. Yard work is good but I believe stamina needs to get worked in also.

Thanks for the info and feel free to ad some to it.

Labor Day weekend there are four days of Spaniel Hunt Tests going on at Scatter Creek I believe.  It is a very good place to see dogs working, meet owners and discuss breeders.   The gallery is allowed to follow fairly close to the working dogs so it is fun to see them in action.  There will be a number of different spaniels in attendance, Springers, English Cockers(great little upland dogs with a lot more endurance and abillity than people give them credit for), Clumbers(the NW is a hot bed of Clumbers), with a chance to see, Sussex, Field, American Water spaniels even Airdales.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've attended that event in the past; well worth it and friendly and informative folks.

I have two field bred springers and also gunned for the hunt tests at Scatter Creek.

Good bunch of people who are full of knowledge. Can't be there this year as we are out of town.

Don't be afraid to introduce yourself and ask questions. Most are more than happy to share and support you in finding a good dog.

Did you make it to any of the Labor Day tests at Scatter creek? I ran my dog in the Senior Test on Sat, but was unable to make it the rest of the days.

Look at some Of Jeff Miller's dogs at Black river kennels or something like that.  He's out of Rochester I believe.  My Springer is out of Montana from Stonebroke Kennels.  Tim Whitney.

My first dog was from Jeff. Best handler around. Highly recommend his dogs.

I will look into Jeff Miller also. Thanks for that, it's nice to see dogs close to home.

Katmai, I believe we spent a good bit of time chatting on Monday. Thanks for spending some of your time with me. I left a message with Tim today to pick his brain also.

Thanks for all the leads and keep adding to it if someone comes up with more.
