binocs or spotting scope for digiscoping/video hunt
« on: July 27, 2015, 09:58:16 PM »
With all the concern of pack weight when heading into the high country how many of you carry binocs and a spotter. In September I will be with 3 others on a bear hunt and would like to video the hunt with a smart phone but not sure if digiscoping through 1 side of binocs is possible that's where the spotting scope comes in is it worth the weight or is there another  way?

Depends on what and where I am hunting if a spotter comes along...example this year i drew a LE mule deer tag in UT and my spotter is coming for sure.

I wouldnt even attempt to hold a phone up to  binos or spotter without an adapter is your wanting to film..its a pain in the butt to line up and hold it there. Id buy a phoneskope for your phone..I have one for my gopro

If you're going to digiscope, you need to use a spotter. The only time I don't bring my spotter is if I'm hunting spike or cow elk.

I just took my 15x vortex vultures back and exchanged them for a 15-45x65 viper hd spotter just so I could use it for digiscoping. I plan on passing up alot of smaller bear this year but still want to shoot them with something

Anytime you need to judge an animal by rack or size, take a spotter. If you are looking to shoot any animal you can find, take 15x binos on a tripod. Regardless, I always carry 8x or 10x binos in my harness for glassing while moving in timber.

If you are going with other guys and are concerned with trophy quality I would have one person leave their rifle and pack the spotter instead. If your concerned about weight. Not everyone will be shooting at the same time if you are hunting together.
