Herring strips –
« on: August 05, 2015, 01:39:59 PM »
I’ve been using these since I saw them in video by Dr T-Hoke many years ago.  They are a must for hoochie fishing.  I couldn’t find the Dr’s video but here’s a good one:

Old trick, since way before scents became popular.

Definitely seems to improve bite ratio on hoochies, in my experience better than scents.

Yes, I use herring on all my hootchies, but I like his rock salt container to cut and store them beforehand.  I normally just cut one at a time on the boat, but this would be faster and keep them from getting mushy.

We have used them for many years too. We were just at Neah Bay and we could tell that the herring was gone if we hadn't had a bite on a certain pole for a while. I don't know why they work so good but just putting scent on a hoochie doesn't work nearly as good. At buoy 10 we always used the tail from a fresh anchovy but at Neah Bay there is no fresh bait for sale so we made up a concentrated salt bath and put a tray of frozen herring in overnight. We even used just the head after we used all the best pieces first. Even just heads worked well.
