Cat scars?
« on: August 08, 2015, 08:17:56 PM »
After checking my trail cam this morning, this new smaller bull showed up. If you look Right behind his shoulder there are lines under the fur. Old cat scars? He never came to the camera in the other direction to see if they are on the other side too. What do you think?

Looks like a "Delicious" to me.....but most animals I see are called "Delicious" so maybe "Lucky" would help identify him.   :chuckle:

I'm on the fence.  Almost look like veins to me showing through the summer hair, but also looks like a paw rake.

Not likely cat.  Inconsistent with normal attack of cat.   More likely the other suggestions or could be anything.

Assuming you are referring to the marks on the front shoulder and not on the back leg (agree veins in summer coat). I would go with cat since you have four scars and each runs parallel until they swing back up like the cat was bucked off as the claws sliced through. It would have had to happen when the bull was a calf and the scars much closer together or that is one big cat!   :twocents:

Thanks for the thoughts. When I have seen scars before they are usually darker/no hair. But these marks are uniform in length and distance apart. My other thought was maybe squeezing under barbed wire as a calf? Puzzling.

Those are awfully far apart for a cat.  I would think maybe getting raked by a fence or some nasty thick crap that they seem to disappear into every time I am around.

I can't rule out cat by any means, but my gut says fence.  Based on checking out several horses over the years reported as cougar attacks, one was, all the rest were cuts from busting through or past wire.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Only way to have better knowledge of what it is, is to shoot it this fall and inspect it closely
