Good scouting this weekend
« on: August 02, 2015, 04:57:21 PM »
Been looking at this area for a while now and finially got a chance to scout it this spring. Found some old scat so I set up a cam in July. Got 5 days of pics and baterys died :bash:  got one little bear on cam and a thin cougar before it died but when I went to check the cam I found these all around it.

The hawthorns are starting to purple up a bit and the bear are hitting the ripe ones. Still plenty of green ones left I hope make it to September

That last picture looks just like the sign I found today, funny how those bears do that!

no huckle berries in this area. All hawthorns and some service berries if think they are called. It's same area I killed the big sow last year. Hoping to find her big brother

Went back in tonight and got battery's in the cam. Another fresh pile right there in front of the cam.  Think I'll let it soak till just before September.

As long as the hawthorns don't ripen too fast. It looks like the service berries(think that's what they are) are the main menu right now but there is another type of berry that grows under the hawthorns that dosent normally ripen till the hawthorns are about gone. Last year I saw bears in these patches till mid October so my confidence is high. Hopefully I'm right and these bears will be hitting these patches till then. I've got several patches to hunt in a 5 mile area and I been taking notes on all the rose hip heavy areas as well

After the trappers ed class at the rendezvous I headed over to Sherman pass to check my other bear spot. Saw a huge bear on private land just after republic along the way.  Berries were almost non-exsistant and what there was was all dried up. Went down low and checked the hawthorns along Sherman creek. Most looked like raisins but there was some fresh sign in there.  Deff a dry year and the berries are disappearing all over :bash:
