Anyone hunt Africa?
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:03:29 PM »
Looking to do it some day, but want to hear from someone who has gone.  I'm researching some hunts and it looks like it is not extremely expensive if you stick to plains game.  I'm going to the SCI banquet on Feb. 7th and will check into some hunts there.  Thanks for any input.

Yes, South Africa.  Bush Africa Safaris.  Top notch outfit.  Almost stayed to guide for them.  I can get you lots of good info as a friend is a booking agent for hunts worldwide.  Free service - the outfitter pays for his services.

I purchased a safari with W. F. Mans Safaris in Namibia at a banquet.  Also got some airplane tickets, too.  It is a good way to safe a few bucks.  When I figured in all the costs it was about ten grand.  It was a wonderful experience.  I was the only hunter for miles around and even though it was a dry year, there was plenty of game.  The hunting was done on one 'farm' that covered 50,000 acres and another that was 120,000 acres.  Be warned, the norm is to hunt on private holdings encircled by a fence.  It took me a day to get used to that, but when I saw how much country there was and how important the wild animals are there, I just worried about hunting and having fun.  I got a Kudu, Gemsbok, Springbok, Red Hartebest, Zebra and Klipspringer.  All great stalks and kills.  The down side was having a taxidermist in Cape Town doing the trophys, cause it is cheaper there in South Africa, and ending up with only half of the animals I shot.  The Kudu, Gemsbok and Springbok where not the ones I shot.  I think they got mixed up with a group of hunters from Alaska.  I couldn't get any help from them, they just ignored me.  W. F. Mans felt bad about it, but what could he do?  He isn't recommending that taxidermist anymore.  Hard part is dealing with people on the other side of the world with accents I can't understand.  So if you go to Africa, watch out for that.

I have hunted in South Africa and Zimbabwe 4 times. Go with a small outfitter where you are the only hunter in camp and you will have an unbelievable trip. Do your homework and really check references.
