Target practicing realizations/quirks

1.  I realized today that I get much more consistent groups shooting between my pins rather than at the distances my pins are set for.  For example, my pins are 15, 25, 35, 45, 55, but my best groupings are shooting on the tens.

2.  I also realized I shoot more consistently using the body outline on my target rather than the multiple dot targets.  I do Ok with the big bullseye, but still better grouping with the body outline.

Anyone else notice these things?  Maybe it's my eyes getting old and the dots confuse me?   :chuckle: 

I did change to a 5/32 peep from my 3/16 which has helped.  I think I have been centering my peep on the sight ring not the bead and the smaller sight covers up the ring more.  I'd like to try a 1/8 peep after elk season since my ram hunt will be in much more open and brighter country (I assume).

So I am not the only one :tup:

I have always thought it had to do with my damaged nerves that made me twitchy.  Looking between the sights or shooting instinctively I tend to get better groups because I don't have pin dancing in front of my eyes.  A few cups a coffee and my pins have the moves of a belly dancer :chuckle:

Not that Im any kind of expert, but Loki take me up on the offer to come shoot the club some time. It would be good to hang and shoot the bow.

Just practice aiming with your pins for a while.  Take a couple days off from actually shooting an arrow.  Take your bow outside like you're going to shoot go through the whole process but never fire an arrow.  Draw back put the pin on the dot and just hold it there until the shot start to breakdown then repeat.  Remember don't shoot an arrow for a couple days.  I think the problem is that as soon as your pin get on target you hit the trigger.  When splitting pins you're just focusing on the spot so you don't do it but once that pin gets close your mind says now.

Hmmmm, that could be.  Although, I've always hated bead sights and prefer an open circle like a target sight in a globe on a 22.

I notice the same thing.  Based on training I have had from SNIPER10 my self-diagnosis is that we are using our conscious mind too much to try to make that dang pin sit perfectly on the target rather than letting our body and mind put it there naturally.  Since the conscious mind can only focus on one thing at a time, it leaves the important stuff like a proper trigger press to our unconscious mind and we are nowhere near as smooth as we would be if that was our focus.  When there isn't a pin, we are forced to allow ourselves to naturally aim where we need to and can put our focus on the other stuff.

If you ever have a chance to take a class by SNIPER10, I highly recommend it.  Not just for bowhunting or archery, but all kinds of shooting.  I really want to get a group together and have him teach his tactical bowhunting course during the off-season.

Might try standing in front of your target at about 5' and shooting with your eyes closed. This can help with more subconscious trigger squeeze.

I realized I was doing this, too. I have to consciously fight it, and in order to that, I have to remember that it's a problem while thinking of all the other things in that moment. I guess that's where the practice comes in!

I realized I was doing this, too. I have to consciously fight it, and in order to that, I have to remember that it's a problem while thinking of all the other things in that moment. I guess that's where the practice comes in!

You want to center your sight guard in your peep, then use the appropriate pin.
