Right handed, Left eye'd
« on: August 30, 2015, 02:37:01 PM »
Alright, I am curious if anyone on here has this issue/problem. My girlfriend has been showing interest in shooting bows, but her dominant eye is opposite from her dominant hand. When I initially was getting her into shooting it was slightly frustrating to figure out what was going on, but eventually she got everything dialed in. She currently shoots a right handed rifle left handed, looking through her left eye, but prefers to still work the bolt with her right hand and feels comfortable squeezing the trigger with her left. I suppose the only real way will be to get into a show and let her try several bows and see what is comfortable, but I was curious if anyone has dealt with this or had to overcome it.

Thanks!

Sounds like me. I'm right eye dominant and can shoot pistols and rifles right handed - in fact, most of my rifles are right handed. Both my bows are left handed and I've started picking up left handed rifles when I'm able.

Sounds like she's a lefty!

:hello:  I'm the same, righty but shoot lefty. With rifles I've become so accustomed that I tried to transition to a lefty rifle and it was difficult so I sold it and now just use a righty rifle. Pistol is the same. I do however now own a lefty bow, I tried a righty bow and it didn't work. Marines didn't care as long as I could shoot straight and on target. :chuckle:  improvise, adapt and overcome

I also am cross dominant.
If it worked for Fred Bear and Glenn St.Charles, who am I to say its a bad thing?
I practice both, still feel more comfortable right handed.
I might not win at a competition, but I would not be in last place either.

I am also left eye dominant and right handed.I shoot rifles and my bow left handed with no problem. It was a lot easier for me to use my left side than to try and sight with my right eye.

Same here my rifle and the ar I built are right handed but I shoot them left.  I shoot pistol right handed but have to close my left eye.  I always shot bow left handed back in high school cant shoot bow now.  I know several others who are like this, it is not that uncommon.  We are the cool kids really.

Wow, I did not realize this was such a common occurrence! Thanks for the input! I am hoping to have her holding a bow before next season!

I am the same way as your girl friend.

Take her to a bow shop with a range. Tell them to let her try right and left bows.
Let her decide what works for her.

In the same exact boat as you. GF has been shooting  both our right handed .270 and 6.5x284 from the left side just fine, hoping a lefty bow will work. We were at cabelas recently picking up some broadheads and she showed some interest towards wanting to get into shooting bows, looked over a few and she specifically said she liked the Bear Cruzer in purple. Did some research on it since then and it seems like a good option. Full kit, light, short ATA, 5-70lb weight adjustment with a 12-30" draw range.

I am cross dominate as well. Rh Led. I have worked on shooting with my non dominate eye. I will say this. I think shooting  with you weak eye is easier if you can close your dominate eye. Scopes &compound bows make it easier for me. I can shoot a pistol either hand but keep both eyes open, but really need to shoot a recurve/traditional bow left handed. Cant hit squat rh even after lots of practice.
